Who do you tell first about pregnancy
When To Tell People You Are Pregnant
Learning you’re pregnant is an exciting moment in your pregnancy journey. After savoring the news yourself, you might wonder when to tell people you are pregnant and how to share this moment with your community, including your partner, parents, family, friends, and coworkers. Though when to announce your pregnancy is ultimately a personal choice, some factors might influence the timing, and we’ve gathered all the helpful details.
When “Should” You Tell People You Are Pregnant? This is a very common question with a not-so-clear-cut answer. There really is no “best” time to announce your pregnancy or a rule for when you should tell people you’re pregnant. When you share the news is totally up to you!
But in addition to the question “When should I announce my pregnancy?” you might be wondering how long to wait to share the news. It might help to consider the following when deciding when to announce your pregnancy:
First trimester. When is it safe to announce a pregnancy? This is a concern for many parents, as early pregnancy loss (a miscarriage earlier than 13 weeks) occurs in about 10 percent of known pregnancies. But the risk of miscarriage is much lower after the first trimester, which is why many feel it’s safer to wait until the following trimester to share the news.
First prenatal appointment. If you think you might be pregnant and take an at-home pregnancy test, you might want to confirm the pregnancy with your healthcare provider before sharing the news. At this appointment, which often takes place at around 8 to 10 weeks, your provider might do a health screening and determine any risk factors. You may feel better knowing these details before sharing your announcement.
Sonogram. If you wait until after an ultrasound exam to share your big news, you'll likely have a sonogram (an ultrasound image) that you could include in your pregnancy announcement, which could be a fun idea! You’ll likely have at least one ultrasound during your pregnancy, typically a standard ultrasound at around 18 to 22 weeks of pregnancy. However, your healthcare provider may recommend more.
If you’re on the fence about when to tell people you are pregnant, it might help to consider the pros and cons of waiting a little longer to reveal the news:
Pros. When you share the news, you have people there to support you. Those early signs of pregnancy aren’t always the most fun (morning sickness and fatigue, for example), and you may want someone in the know to help you along the way. Plus, it’s fun to have your partner, friend, or family member there to discuss exciting things, like choosing a unique baby name or decorating the nursery.
Cons. Once you share the news, get ready for all the questions! Everyone will want to know how you’re feeling and might even want to touch your belly. And one con to really think about is what happens if you do have a miscarriage after announcing your pregnancy. It’s a personal choice, so ask yourself if it’s better for just one or two people in your inner support circle to know or if you’re OK with others knowing.
So, when do people announce their pregnancy?
Everyone is different, of course, with various factors at play that could influence when to tell people you are pregnant. You can share the news right away or wait until that baby bump of yours is starting to show. It’s really up to you! But keep reading for a little more advice on when to tell people you are pregnant, starting with your partner and even your acquaintances.

When to Tell Your Partner You're PregnantWhen it comes to a pregnancy announcement to your husband or partner, there are two popular times to reveal the news:
As soon as possible. Some like to share the news with their partner right away! It’s exciting for both of you, and it might be helpful to have your partner’s support from the get-go.
After the first prenatal visit. If you’d like to get your pregnancy confirmed by your healthcare provider, you could wait until after that initial prenatal appointment.
For cute pregnancy announcement ideas, check out the video below:
When to Tell Your Parents You're PregnantWhen to tell your parents you’re pregnant depends on personal circumstances, but some popular times include:
As soon as possible. Some people like to tell their entire inner support circle right away, and that might include your parents.
After telling your partner. If you want your partner to be the first to know, your parents are usually the next in line, and it might be fun to surprise them together!
After the standard ultrasound. Using the sonogram photo is a great way to announce your pregnancy to your parents, so you might want to wait until after your ultrasound.
As for your siblings, aunts, uncles, and other members of your immediate family, there are quite a few popular times:
After telling your partner and parents. Once your partner and parents know the news, siblings and immediate family are typically the next to find out.
After the standard ultrasound. Again, if you’d like to use your sonogram photo to reveal the news, you can wait until after your ultrasound.
As you start to show. Your baby bump could be a clue to others, so sharing the news when you start showing might be the best time.
When do people announce their pregnancy to other friends, bosses, coworkers, and casual acquaintances? These groups are typically the last to know, and you can share your news with them whenever you want! A baby announcement at work might look different than a casual social media post. Still, here are a few popular timings:
After the standard ultrasound. A cute little photo or social media post of your sonogram is a great way to announce your pregnancy. Plus, you might feel it’s safe to share your news with your wider circle by that time.
As you start to show. Once you start showing, it’ll be tricky to hide the news from friends, coworkers, and acquaintances. When your belly bump arrives might be the time to announce your pregnancy.
With a birth announcement. For casual friends or acquaintances that you see only once in a while or interact with on social media, you might want to wait until your baby is born and send or post a birth announcement.
Once you decide when to tell people you are pregnant, you can start thinking about how to share your news. You can really get creative with this, whether you’re telling your partner you’re pregnant or surprising your parents, but a few typical ways to reveal your pregnancy include:
In person. Revealing the news face-to-face can make the moment even more special. Share your announcement over dinner or with a fun night in!
At a party. When you want to tell a group of people the news, you might want to consider a party for your friends, family, and/or coworkers. This way, everyone can celebrate together!
On a virtual call. If family or friends live far away—or you want to embrace the digital age—there’s always a virtual call. You can stand up to reveal your baby bump as a surprise!
On social media. Announcing your pregnancy on social media has become the go-to method after letting your close family and friends know. It’s a great way to share the news with a wide audience all at once.
With a card. A classic card via snail mail or e-mail is always an option. You can design a pregnancy announcement card to send in the mail or opt for an e-card.
Via phone. Sometimes, all you need is a phone call or even a text! You can send something first like “I have news…” to set up your announcement.
How you tell people you’re pregnant may depend on who they are and your unique situation. It’s common to share the news in person with your partner and parents, and some enjoy telling their immediate family in person, too, or with a party.
If your family lives far away, virtual calls, classic phone calls, or pregnancy announcement cards are all great options. Deciding on how to tell friends you are pregnant may depend on how close you are and could include an in-person visit, party, or card. A cute social media post might be all you need for other acquaintances.
The Bottom LineDeciding when to announce your pregnancy comes down to personal choice and may be dependent on a few factors. Some like to tell their inner support circle (partner, best friend, or parents) early to have some help from the start. But others like to wait until after the first trimester when the risk of miscarriage is low. Everyone’s situation is different, so consider the information above to make the right decision for you and your family.

Who Should I Tell I'm Pregnant To First?
By HK Parra
You've got a little one on the way! There's so much to do, but first things first, announcements are in order!
Credit: PixabayYou're pregnant? Congratulations! We're so happy for you! Now that you've got a little one on the way, there's so much to do, but first things first, announcements are in order! Before you rush off to let everyone know the terrific news, you may be wondering if there is some kind of order to follow when it comes to announcing you're pregnant to your circle of loved ones? Let's chat about it.
The Traditional Way To Announce Pregnancy
Tradition seems to dictate that pregnancy announcements start as follows: partner, immediate family (parents, partner's parents, siblings, partner's siblings), extended family, friends, co-workers, and then work out to neighbors and acquaintances.
But if 2020 has taught us anything, it's that we are adaptable creatures and we can adapt to change. On the other hand, if tradition in this sense suits you and your partner's needs perfectly, then march forth! But for others who might need to tweak the "old rule" - go for it! There should be nothing stopping you from telling who you feel you need to tell first, as long as you are being respectful of your partner's wishes.

Consider Your Partner's Feelings
Obviously, you didn't create this little bundle of joy all alone and unless you conceived your pregnancy via IVF with the help of a sperm bank donor, and even so, there could still be a partner involved. He or she should be the glaring highlighted and underlined first choice on your list of "people to tell this wonderful news to". Although, you might be a crafty type of gal who wants to plan some sort of surprise or unforgettable experience to reveal this incredible news to your love. Like what, you may ask? A video reveal that could be tender and emotional, just for the two of you to share for years to come, or perhaps something hilarious that you plan to share with the whole family eventually if your partner's okay with that, of course.
The only thing is that however elaborate your reveal is, it may take planning and resources and that usually calls for friends and family or at least one good friend or family member. Of course, this would mean that a friend or family member would learn the news first but you know your partner best. Would they be okay with that in exchange for the way that they learned they're about to have a child? Only you know the right answer. And hey, if you can pull it all off yourself, more power to you. Maybe in the end you'll decide that less is more and you can achieve your goal without a ton of preparations.
Another idea is that you could skip the use of a family member or friend's help and all together and depending on the nature of your surprise or reveal, you may wish to hire the help of an event service or party planner. This way, there won't be someone personally involved in your lives that knows the big pregnancy announcement before your partner, just a neutral party, a stranger essentially.
His Parents Or Mine?
A big debate between expecting couples is which set of parents gets told the exciting news first. This can be an especially sticky situation if the two sets of parents have ever had any sort of feud or "bad blood" between them in the past. If this is the case, might we recommend that you get together in a neutral meeting place to share the news with all four at once? If COVID-19 is an issue and you don't want to risk any of the parents' health (if someone has a health concern) or if one or both sets of parents live far away, set up a Facetime or video chat date for all six of you. This way, everyone gets to hear the news at the exact same time and there will be no chance for bickering. After the news has been shared and pleasantries exchanged, you can excuse yourself to talk to your parents alone while your partner talks with his parents. It's a win/win/win!
True, maybe your parents might be a little miffed at you for not telling them first with a private phone call and maybe his parents will complain to him a little for not giving them the first heads up but they won't be able to have a just defense because each set of parents were told at the exact same time and the baby is the equal grandbaby to both sets of grandparents. Hopefully, if you do have feuding (or passive-aggressive) parents and in-laws, the birth of their first grandbaby will be the time to lay the differences aside.
Whomever you decide to share your pregnancy news with first will be the right person if you feel it in your heart. But please, let us be the first to say - Congratulations, mama-to-be!

Answers to questions you receive about pregnancy management
Answers to questions you receive about pregnancy managementPregnancy management is a responsible long-term process that not every expectant mother is ready to entrust to antenatal clinic doctors. In addition, it is more convenient for many women to visit a specialist on Saturdays or in the evening, so as not to break away from work. That is why today the management of pregnancy in a private medical center is the priority choice of the majority.
How many times should I visit a doctor during pregnancy?
Regular visits to the ob/gyn at Maya Clinic during pregnancy is not a whim of your personal doctor, but a requirement of the World Health Organization. Moreover, in different countries, the number of mandatory prenatal visits is different.
For example, in Georgia, the expectant mother meets with a gynecologist only 4 times throughout her pregnancy, in Lithuania 5 times, in Moldova - 6, Armenia - 8, Kazakhstan 4-14 and in Russia 13-16 times - depending on the condition of the pregnant woman .
I must say that in the last decade, almost all orders of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on obstetric and gynecological care are based on the latest recommendations of the World Health Organization. That is, at the level of the legislative framework, the obstetric and gynecological service of Ukraine does not lag behind world practice.
Another question is that in some medical institutions there are material and technical capabilities and the enthusiasm of the team to work "in a European way", while others are lagging behind.
In Ukraine, 8-9 obligatory visits of a pregnant woman to the doctor are accepted, (8 - in the period up to 40 weeks of pregnancy and 1 more at the 41st week if the birth has not occurred).
You will see a doctor:
- once a month until 32 weeks of pregnancy;
- 2 times a month after 32 weeks until delivery.
Let us emphasize once again that this is the minimum number of meetings with a doctor required for a normal pregnancy. In case of pregnancy complications, the number of meetings with the doctor is determined individually and depends on the physical and emotional state of the expectant mother.
Registration during pregnancy.
First visit to the doctor during pregnancyThe very first, exciting visit, which confirms the onset of pregnancy, should take place for up to 12 weeks. As a rule, it falls on the 5th-6th week, when a woman observes a long absence of menstruation.
What the doctor does during the first visit to a pregnant woman:
- Prepares all necessary medical documentation and creates your personal exchange card.
- Asks you to complete a questionnaire with basic information about yourself.
- Conducts a detailed survey about your state of health, including clarifies the presence of hereditary, chronic, gynecological diseases. Information about the health of the future father is also collected.
- Asks a series of questions that identify risk factors for gestational diabetes.
- Identifies the prerequisites for the development of preeclampsia.
- Identifies the need for genetic counseling.
Your doctor may also be interested in your working conditions. If earlier it was considered harmful: work at the machine and activities related to toxic substances, now among the dangerous professions are business women and salespeople who spend all day on their feet, and operators who constantly communicate via mobile communications and many others.
The first examination should be very thorough.
It includes:
- Determination of body weight, height and blood pressure.
- Pelvic examination: measures and evaluates the shape of the pelvis.
- Blood tests: complete blood count, tests for infectious diseases (syphilis, hepatitis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)) and rubella immunity. Blood type and Rhesus are determined.
- Urinalysis: A urine sample is cultured and chemically analyzed.
- Cervical swab: A tissue sample from the cervix is examined for cervical cancer.
- Test for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): At the same time as the pap smear, another sample of cervical tissue is taken to test for STDs (gonorrhea or chlamydial infection).
- Other tests may be done, depending on the woman's condition. If a woman is Rh-negative, the presence of antibodies to the Rh factor is determined. They can be dangerous for an Rh-positive fetus and even cause its death. If antibodies are detected early enough in pregnant women, the fetus can be protected.
What ultrasound is used for
Ultrasound is used to:0004
Late in pregnancy, ultrasound may be performed to detect premature rupture of the membranes surrounding the fetus and amniotic fluid.
What to talk about with the doctor during the first visit
- Be sure to discuss your folic acid intake. The fact is that the lack of this substance provokes the underdevelopment of the fetal nervous system, so daily intake up to 12 weeks should be 400 mg. Sometimes, to determine a more accurate rate of the drug, experts prescribe a blood test for homocysteine. The higher this figure, the more folic acid you need to take.
- Discuss the issue of rational nutrition. Talk about optimal weight gain. Now many books and online publications are full of a variety of healthy menus for pregnant women, which involve preparing 4-5 fresh meals daily. Probably the network and such happy expectant mothers who can handle it, but if you work a lot and do not have the opportunity to spend so much time in the kitchen, discuss the best nutritional option with your doctor.
- Discuss prenatal minerals and vitamins. Do not listen to your friends, but check with your doctor what is right for you.
- Talk about how to alleviate early morning sickness if it does.
- Be sure to tell us about your bad habits, if any. Together with the doctor, work out a strategy for avoiding them.
- Talk about your load at work, clarify what you can do and what you absolutely cannot do. What to do in case of feeling of constant fatigue, drowsiness, fatigue and absent-mindedness.
- Ask if you can continue your sex life. In most cases, the doctor will give a positive answer, only serious disorders, such as placenta previa, threatened miscarriage, etc.
- Discuss your physical activity, you will probably have to give up your usual activities, but a competent specialist can recommend a complex exercises that will help keep the muscles in good shape without harming the fetus. Read more in the article Sports during pregnancy.
- Ask about what happens to the fetus, how it grows and develops when you feel movement.
- It is very important that your doctor describe to you all the dangerous symptoms of an abortion. This will help you not to worry about trifles and readily accept any changes in the body. However, any deviations from the norm should be clear to you. You must know who to call and where to go in case of a threat.
- Talk about the participation of the future father in the process of pregnancy, describe his habits, life principles, fears. So the doctor will be able to choose the most correct tactics of behavior with your partner.
- You may have many more questions, be sure to write them down in a notebook so you don't miss anything important.

Since ancient times, women have been looking for ways to find out about pregnancy as early as possible. Documents found during the study of the Egyptian pyramids (1370 BC) describe this method of early detection of pregnancy: a woman should urinate on barley and wheat seeds. If the grain sprouted shortly thereafter, the woman was considered pregnant. The method was tested by modern scientists in 1963, and it turned out that such a text is really effective in 70% of cases. This is due to an increase in the level of estrogen in the body of the expectant mother, which is excreted along with urine and accelerates the process of grain germination.
And at the end of the 17th century, the so-called "olfactory" method was popular. They set fire to a cloth soaked in women's urine. If the woman did not like the smell formed during burning, it was concluded that the lady was in position. However, there are many such methods, many of them have been tested for centuries and have the right to exist. In the article we will talk about the most effective testless methods for determining the "interesting position" - both medical and folk. The latter do not guarantee 100% reliability, since they do not have scientific justification and confirmation, but they will help not to delay a visit to the gynecologist.
How to understand the first signs of pregnancy without a test
Medical methods are the most reliable in determining pregnancy without a test. If you suspect that you are in an interesting position, go to the antenatal clinic. The gynecologist will examine you and direct you to donate blood for the hCG hormone.
HCG
Blood should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach. The concentration of chronic genadotropin increased throughout pregnancy. If the egg is not fertilized, the indicator is 0-5 mU / ml. If the gestational age is from one to two weeks - 25-156 mU / ml.
Ultrasound
From the seventh day, the fact of conception can be determined by ultrasound. Ultrasound is needed not only to confirm pregnancy. The doctor will also determine the condition of the reproductive organs, the location of the embryo, and exclude an ectopic pregnancy.

Signs of pregnancy in the early stages will help determine the measurement of basal temperature
This method is called by gynecologists one of the most reliable. At the beginning of the menstrual cycle, the basal temperature (BT) is kept at around 36.5 - 36.7 ° C, rises to 37 ° C by ovulation. In the event that there was no conception, after the cessation of ovulation, BT again decreases to average values. If you are pregnant, the temperature will be kept within 37 ° C.
How to measure basal body temperature?
A conventional thermometer is inserted into the rectum or vagina. The procedure should be carried out every day at the same time in the morning, without getting out of bed. When measuring temperature:
- Stay in the same position in which you woke up
- Measure BBT 5-8 minutes
- Write down the values (with date and time)
Important! During the period of determining the basal temperature, it is advisable not to smoke or drink alcohol.
Pregnancy symptoms - "Grandma's" methods of determination
You can determine pregnancy without a test using folk methods. They are affordable, harmless to health and help you get quick results without leaving your home.
How does iodine help determine pregnancy?
You can find out that you are pregnant with regular iodine.
What you need:
- Napkin or sheet of paper
- Plastic or glass containers
- Iodine
- Pipette
What to do:
- Collect some urine in a container
- Soak a tissue/paper in the urine
- Lay out on a flat surface
- Pipette iodine
- Place a few drops on paper
Result:
- If the color of the iodine has not changed or changed to a bright dark blue, there is no pregnancy.
- If the iodine has changed color to lilac or lilac, you are pregnant.
Advantages of the method:
- Everything you need is at hand
- Early pregnancy detection
Cons of the method:
- Not 100% guaranteed
- Accurate adherence to instructions
- Time limit: you only have 25 minutes for the test, then the urine becomes unusable
Find out about pregnancy with soda
What you need:
- Soda
- Urine
- container
What to do:
- Collect about 150-200 ml of morning urine in a container
- Pour 1 teaspoon baking soda into the urine
Results:
- The mixture bubbles and hisses, which means that the acidity is normal. you are not pregnant
- Soda settled on the bottom, which means that my acidity is lowered. There is a high probability that conception has occurred.
Advantages of the method:
- Cheap
- Accessibility
Cons of the method:
- Efficiency not confirmed by studies
- May give a false result (due to the nature of the urine)
There is another way to check for a possible pregnancy, which does not require "chemical experiments". It consists of palpation of the pulse on the abdomen. Place your fingers on your abdomen two fingers below your navel. During pregnancy, the blood supply to this area increases, the pulse becomes more frequent and well audible.
Pregnancy definition based on changes in well-being and mood
There are several symptoms in early pregnancy before your period that may suggest you are pregnant before you see your doctor or buy a test. Listen to your body. You are probably pregnant if:
- No menstruation
- Feeling dizzy, there is a veil in front of the eyes
- Body temperature rises to 37 - 37. 5°C for a long time
- Stuffy nose
- Enlarged, swollen breasts, the color of the nipples changed, they became hypersensitive
- Feeling of heaviness and pain in the navel, in the lower abdomen
- You feel sick, your sense of smell and touch are acute
- Overweight
- Frequent mood swings, tearfulness
- Weakness, increased drowsiness
- Gastronomic "shifts" - the desire to "taste" unsuitable for food substances, such as chalk. Cravings for salty, sweet, sour
- A sharp decrease or increase in sexual desire
There are many ways to determine pregnancy without a test, but you should not rely only on physiological changes occurring in your body and "grandmother's" tests. Finding out that you may soon become a mother is best from a gynecologist. Only a specialist will be able to prevent abnormalities in the development of the fetus and determine an ectopic pregnancy, if any. Modern diagnostic methods are very effective, and using them you can endure and give birth to a healthy baby.
