The Best Books To Read During Pregnancy And The First Year
What to read when you're expecting.
GettyWhen I first learned I was pregnant, I was quick to devour any book I could that would help me prepare for the months ahead. I spent so much time reading about all things pre-natal, and when the baby came, I realized I hadn’t read much about what was to come beyond those first few months. The other thing was, everything I had read pre-baby seemed to make sense, like a nap schedule, or feeding times, but once my baby was here, it all felt completely different. I remember my very sleep-deprived-self asking my pediatrician, “What books should I be reading?” and she was like “Reading! I mean if you have time, but don’t stress yourself out.” When you have a baby, and then a growing child, there will always be new things to learn, but here are my favorite books to read during pregnancy and have on hand for the first year.
What No One Tells You: A Guide to Your Emotions from Pregnancy to Motherhood
What No One Tells You: A Guide to Your Emotions from Pregnancy to MotherhoodWhat No One Tells You: A Guide to Your Emotions from Pregnancy to Motherhoodby Dr. Alexandra Sacks and Dr. Catherine Birndorf
Written by two top reproductive psychiatrists, this book is a must for new mothers. When you are pregnant, the focus is always so much on your developing baby, and your body reaching each milestone on the way. But there are deep mental changes that go on when you become a mother and no longer responsible just for your individual self. The book explains how it is normal to experience feelings that may feel unnerving, like panic when finding out you are pregnant after months of trying, or not feeling love at first sight for your baby. I loved how this book introduced me to the concept of “Matrescence”, the birth of a mother, and how it can be as stressful as adolescence.
Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong--and What You Really Need to Know
Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong--and What You Really Need to KnowExpecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong—and What You Really Need to Know
by Emily Oster
A fellow pregnant mom sent me this book after we had a conversation over whether the occasional glass of wine while pregnant was really a bad thing. Economist Emily Oster delves into the data behind many aspects of pregnancy health, from why having a drink isn’t necessarily bad for you, but why gardening may be dangerous. It was so interesting to see the data behind how much airplane travel is rsiky, or how long does the average labor really take. Oster’s main message in the book, is that making good decisions requires two things, the right data, and how it impacts you personally. While after reading it, I still decided to avoid alcohol while pregnant, but I did appreciate having the data to make my own decision.
What to Expect When You're Expecting
What to Expect When You're Expecting What to Expect When You’re Expectingby Heidi Murkoff
This book is so classic, it even had a movie made after it. During my pregnancy, it was so exciting to turn to each new month, and read up on what was going on with my body and my growing baby. It ended up sitting on my coffee table as a variable pregnancy encyclopedia, heartburn? Cramps? Sleeplessness? It became comforting to have a book on hand to read up on what I was experiencing.
Twelve Hours' Sleep by Twelve Weeks Old: A Step-by-Step Plan for Baby Sleep Success
Twelve Hours' Sleep by Twelve Weeks Old: A Step-by-Step Plan for Baby Sleep Success Twelve Hours' Sleep by Twelve Weeks Old: A Step-by-Step Plan for Baby Sleep Successby Suzy Giordano and Lisa Abidin
During my pregnancy, and first few months of my new life as a mom, this book was one of the most referenced. My knowing brother and sister-in-law who are my go-to parental advisors gave me this book when I was expecting and said, “If you read any book, just read this one.” When I read it while pregnant, it seemed so simple, you just feed the baby and put them to sleep and voila, they sleep twelve hours at night. In the early–and sleepless–nights, whenever anyone asked how the baby was sleeping, and I was clearly exhausted, it was like a chorus, “You gotta read Twelve by Twelve!” It certainly is a book that I have gone back to again and again, and made my own little tweaks. I am happy to say that around four months, he just magically started sleeping through the night, and this book as been a great guide.
What to Expect the First Year
What to Expect the First YearWhat to Expect the First Yearby Heidi Murkoff
This book was given to me by my health insurance company of all things, but it has become my nightstand staple during this first year of my son’s life. It is so exciting to find ten minutes to sit down, and read about the month ahead. This first year of having a baby, everything changes so quickly, and every month is a new set of milestones to look for. It has become my go-to guide for finger foods, feeding schedules, developmental cues and anything you could think of during year one.
Baby's Eat, Sleep & Poop Journal, Log Book
Baby's Eat, Sleep & Poop Journal, Log BookBaby's Eat, Sleep & Poop Journal, Log Bookby Sandra Kosak
This book may send like TMI, but I am pretty sure that nearly every parent records all this seemingly critical data for at least their first child. Some people use apps, some use regular old notepads, but I used a proper journal. It was super helpful in the early days when time merges into itself, and you cant remember when the last time the baby had a bottle or a bowel movement. I also loved using a book instead of an app, because if you are lucky enough to have any helpers around, they can easily note details right in the journal and not need to login to an app. Sometimes things are better in analog, and for me, this was very helpful.
Cribsheet: A Data-Driven Guide to Better, More Relaxed Parenting, from Birth to Preschool
Cribsheet: A Data-Driven Guide to Better, More Relaxed Parenting, from Birth to Preschool Cribsheet: A Data-Driven Guide to Better, More Relaxed Parenting, from Birth to PreschoolBy Emily Oster
This book is the second book from economist Emily Oster, and it really did have a comforting effect on me. Parents are so quick to try to find linear lines from one thing to another to make sense of their children. For better or worse, every parent watches for each milestone and eagerly awaits it, hoping to gain insight to what their child may be like. Early crawler? Genius! Never crawled? Yikes!
My biggest takeaway from this book, is that nothing really means anything. Just because your baby said “Dada” at 4 months, doesn’t mean they are a genius, and because your baby didn’t say “Dada” until 14 months, doesn’t mean they aren’t intelligent. There are of course things that deviate from the norm, but those will be best picked up on by your childs’ pediatrician.
The Fourth Trimester: A Postpartum Guide to Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions, and ... [+] Restoring Your Vitality
The Fourth Trimester: A Postpartum Guide to Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions, and Restoring Your VitalityThe Fourth Trimester: A Postpartum Guide to Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions, and Restoring Your Vitalityby Kimberly Ann Johnson
This book taught me a new term: Fourth Trimester. While I thought the third trimester was the last and it ended with birth, it is such a great way to think about the the time after you have your baby. While it is so hard to take care of yourself in those early months, it is so important to do your best to rest and eat healthy. This book explores a lot of what you can do ahead of time to prepare, and ways to take care of your baby to reduce stress on your body.
As You Grow: A Modern Memory Book for Baby
As You Grow: A Modern Memory Book for BabyAs You Grow: A Modern Memory Book for Babyby Korie Herold
Okay, maybe one more thing that is better analog vs. digital, a classic baby book. A friend of mine got me a very sweet baby book, and its been fun to occasionally fill in little milestones and memories like what was the first thing we ate at the hospital after our baby was born, or have a place to put all those ultrasound pictures and first lock of hair. My mother-in-law is very quick to share my husbands baby book with me, and I hope one day, I will do the same.

Reading for pregnant women: how to prepare for motherhood and childbirth
While expecting a baby, a woman may experience mood swings, anxiety and fears associated with pregnancy and the upcoming birth. Mood swings - a consequence of hormonal changes in the body, slight excitement and anxiety - are quite useful for a more responsible approach to an important matter, but fears are a completely unnecessary and harmful thing. Fears arise from ignorance of the causes of occurrence and from the inability to act correctly in a given situation.
Every year about 150 million babies are born in the world and this process is, of course, very well studied and described in many medical articles and popular books. It remains only to choose the most useful of them and gain knowledge.
And here is the first useful knowledge: fears and mental anguish can cause toxicosis in the first trimester. Do you need it? - Not. This means that we get answers to specific questions from our obstetrician-gynecologist, watch educational films, sign up for training courses and read useful books from the AST Publishing House.
What else can you advise a future mother?
- First, do not try to solve all problems at the same time, wanting to get answers to exciting questions within one day. It is necessary to postpone some questions for some time. Most of them will be resolved without your participation.
- Secondly, at the moment, the most important thing is to accept a new state, learn to indulge your little weaknesses, change your point of view and feel a special taste for the changes that are taking place. A responsible approach to pregnancy is the rejection of bad habits, adherence to the regime of work and rest, the ability to avoid everyday troubles, not to react to annoying little things. It would seem that common and banal truths, but they will allow you to endure and give birth to a healthy and strong baby.
