How to get the baby out
7 Natural Ways to Induce Labor
7 Natural Ways to Induce LaborMedically reviewed by Meredith Wallis, MS, APRN, CNM, IBCLC — By Ashley Marcin on May 13, 2020
Your due date is an educated guess for when your baby might make its arrival.
While many women deliver perfectly healthy babies 2 weeks before or after this presumed due date, it’s recommended that women wait until at least 39 weeks for delivery.
It’s best to let mother nature decide when your baby comes.
In a 2011 study, 201 women who had recently delivered babies were surveyed about inducing labor at home. Of these women, 50 percent had tried a natural method of getting labor started.
If you’re 40 weeks in, here are seven natural ways to get things moving along.
Most of these methods are anecdotal and don’t have solid evidence that they work, so you should always talk to your healthcare provider before attempting any of these methods.
Your midwife or doctor may not be able to confirm that they work, but they can let you know if it’s safe to try with your pregnancy.
Exercise can be anything that gets the heart rate up, such as a long walk. Even if this method doesn’t work, it’s a great way to relieve stress and keep your body strong for the task ahead.
Theoretically, there are multiple reasons why having sex could induce labor.
For example, sexual activity, especially having an orgasm, can release oxytocin, which may help jumpstart uterine contractions.
Also, for pregnant people who have sex with men, there are prostaglandin hormones in semen that might help ripen the cervix.
Having sex is safe during the final weeks of pregnancy, but you shouldn’t have sex after your water has broken. Doing so can increase your risk for infection.
Stimulating your nipples can cause your uterus to contract and may bring about labor.
Nipple stimulations stimulate oxytocin production. Oxytocin is the hormone that causes the uterus to contract and the breast to eject milk.
In fact, if you choose to breastfeed your baby right after delivery, this same stimulation is what will help your uterus shrink back to its original size.
You or your partner may manually stimulate your nipples, or you can try using a breast pump.
Solidresearch shows that breast stimulation can be an effective way to:
- induce and augment labor
- avoid a medical induction
- reduce rates of postpartum hemorrhage
Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years. The exact way that acupuncture works is unclear.
In Chinese Medicine, it’s believed that it balances the chi or vital energy within the body. It might also stimulate changes in hormones or in the nervous system.
Acupuncture should be administered only by a licensed acupuncturist.
In a 2013 randomized trial in Denmark, more than 400 women were given acupuncture, membrane stripping, or both procedures before labor.
Study results showed that acupuncture didn’t decrease the need for induction, but sweeping membranes did.
According to research, the main benefit of acupuncture is increased cervical ripening.
Some practitioners believe that acupressure can help start labor. Prior to applying acupressure to yourself, make sure you get proper instruction from a trained acupressure professional.
If acupressure doesn’t get your labor going, it can still be an excellent way to alleviate pain and discomfort during labor.
Drinking a little bit, like only 1–2 ounces (29.57–59.14 mL) of castor oil stimulates prostaglandin release, which can help ripen the cervix and get labor started.
It’s recommended that this be done under the supervision of a midwife or doctor. People should be careful not to drink too much.
Someresearch shows that eating dates in the final weeks of pregnancy
- increases cervical ripening and cervical dilation at the start of labor
- decreases the need for Pitocin use during labor
Most pregnant people at 40 weeks are likely ready to have their babies out of their bellies as soon as possible and in their arms.
However, there are plenty of perks to waiting until your body naturally decides to go into labor — including recovery.
Women who weren’t induced typically recover more quickly than those who were. More time in the womb can mean both you and your new baby get to go home from the hospital sooner.
Infants who are born after a full-term pregnancy also experience other benefits. More time in the womb typically means:
- more time to build muscle and strength
- reduced risk of low blood sugar, infection, and jaundice
- improved breathing as infants born even as little as two weeks early can experience twice the number of complications
- better feeding once born
- increased brain development, with the brain growing a third of its size between weeks 35 and 40
Let your body do the work for a few more days and take the time to get as much rest as you possibly can.
We know, that’s easier said than done when you’re 9 months pregnant. You and your baby will need all your energy soon enough!
Before trying anything that might induce labor, speak with your healthcare provider to go over any risks or possible complications.
Though some of these methods are popular folklore among pregnant women, little scientific evidence supports their efficacy.
In most cases, it’s best to let baby set their own birth date, even if it means waiting another week or two.

6 ways to get a child out of the phone, or No gadgets - no problems
One of the most common questions of parents is how to get a child out of gadgets without tears and resistance. And whether it is necessary to pull it out at all. Lyudmila Chirkova, mother of three children, believes that they do not have such problems at home. She is sure that there are several ways to help children find an interesting activity without a phone in their hands. And in general, breaking away from gadgets is not so difficult. Recall that one can reasonably argue with the author's opinion.
No gadget, no problem
The easiest way to remove a gadget from a child's life is to simply leave it out. Thank you, cap, you say. But what about adults?! After all, they need all these toys. Maybe. I do not know. The tablet in our family appeared on the strength of 5 years ago and was bought for the piano, for notes. Dad has a prefix, but she lives in the country. And in the country, as you know, there is no time for gadgets at all - there are more interesting things to do there. And dad himself rarely comes to her.
Yes, my children don't know how to navigate smartly on an iPad, shoot someone there from a slingshot, and build worlds from drawn cubes. They do all this in real life, and they are friends with technology only in their studies. The tablet came in handy to download all the textbooks into it and not carry them with you to school. They lie there in the classroom, and at home all the homework is through a magic screen. Toys? They are simply not there. And the ability to download them too.
The phone is your assistant, not a time waster
It was crazy for me to watch children in kindergarten with phones. Why?! I immediately remembered how I was in class at school 10-11 and the most major majors showed off their phones in class. I was perplexed - what the hell is he to you?! Also now. The telephone is a utilitarian thing.
The eldest got it at the age of seven, for one day a week. On Fridays, she called from the music school when her classes were over and she had to be picked up.
The average phone appeared only in the second grade, and even then only because the watch-phone was somehow unsuccessful and constantly buggy.
The younger one… I hope that he, too, will do fine until the first class without a gadget.
You need a phone to keep in touch with your parents, friends. To see a map, quickly find out your homework, find out information that you lack. This is your assistant. And this is how I position it for children. They know that if mom is on the phone, then she is working.
Laptop not for gaming
We have never had a ban on a computer. Here it is, please. True, my mother works on it. A lot of. For a long time. Usually the whole day, with short breaks for games and household chores. Then you can watch cartoons, YouTube, sit in the simulators or delve into the library. The kids have laptops. The simplest and most prehistoric ones are just right for Word, graphics tablet programs and the Internet. Both older ladies are aware of the existence of online toys, but they are not particularly interested in them. And the younger one is too small to open this new wonderful world to him. Even without it, he perfectly builds worlds from wooden blocks and a spoon that does not exist.
Notebook is a story about classes, zoom, lessons and learning assistance. True, after a couple of times using Google translator and a deuce for such homework, the realization comes that something went wrong somewhere.
Plus, I regularly have to hold conversations on the topic “not all information is equally useful” and learn to check the sources. As for me, this is the most important skill that a person should have: searching and processing information and the ability to find rational and practical application for it.
Restrictions work
Now they are throwing slippers at me, saying that I am violating the child's personal boundaries. And how can freedom be restricted! Can. Until the age of 18, I am their parent, that is, I am responsible for their health, development, etc. Well, it will sink. Well, get angry, a day or two. The evil unicorn passed away in a day when she set a limit from 22:00 to 7:00 on sleeping on the phone. Then I just took it for granted.
Parental control is a great thing. You can customize everything in such detail that it's scary. Suppose a child can play checkers as much as he likes. Learn the language. I do not put restrictions on these applications, but on instant messengers you have an hour. Need to watch a video? Use a laptop.
And we don't sit at the table with a phone. Even dad - by the way, he receives comments more often than others.
Filter content
My children are not in the topic of tiktok, likes and everything else. Do they suffer from it? I don't think. They always have something to discuss with classmates. I allowed downloading different games to my phone (the time limit still works), but the eldest quickly lost interest in them. And she feels sorry for the time. She would rather watch a couple of new anime episodes on her laptop than spend extra time playing the next batch of Among us - you can play this in real life too. 9as well as mastering a set-top box for a TV that can deliver any content. She is also very dependent. So all sorts of popular slag quickly flooded the air with the advent of the telephone. And also quickly left. Each time I explain why this or that content is bad. I find out why he liked her so much. She rebels and considers me an enemy of humanity, complains to dad that mom is bad. Ok, I know that mom is always bad.
Keep your word
There was an epic-fail in the summer. I found that the average somehow broke control on the iPhone and sat on the phone for 5-7 hours a day. It went on for a whole week. At first, I just showed her screen time tracking. Then she said that it was work time. And then silently took the phone from her and put it away. Until September. If she is not able to control herself, I will do it. In order.
The main thing is to keep your word and not go along with it. Now the average young lady has a phone only at school and only on weekdays. The rest of the time it lies in my bag.
And you know what? No gadget, no problem. Children very quickly adapt to new conditions and find something to do: play, fool around, read, help expel 30 liters of juice, bake charlotte, go build a shelter in case of a zombie apocalypse. They also learn to communicate with each other not through instant messengers, but by voice and live. And lo and behold, they become smarter and more curious! But there is one drawback - you have to turn on, answer questions and play their games.

Get the baby out of the phone. Mission Impossible?
For whom are children ready to raise their eyes from the screen and return to offline? Is someone capable of pulling a child out of the phone without screaming and violence? There are such people. We tell you who and what is in trend among schoolchildren .
On the eve of the summer holidays, parents are making cunning plans to prevent their children from hanging out with computer games and in gamer chats around the clock. Taking away or limiting is not the best tactic. We'll have to strain: argue, control, spoil relationships. But with a ticket to the camp, you kill all the rabbits at once: firstly, you take a break from the parental role yourself, and secondly, the child develops offline, career-oriented, heals in the fresh air, pumps teamwork skills and, of course, has fun.
Even if the camp has an educational orientation, the children live there not only by studies and projects. Of course, having a phone and Wi-Fi, the child will not be bored anywhere. But the fact of the matter is that the telephone must be defeated. And if chess grandmasters lose to computers, then the creatives of the camp lead this game.
The first step is to erase the boundaries between children
Children come to the children's center in different ways. Some win the competition with some interesting project, having spent a lot of effort and energy on it and receiving a ticket as a reward. They go to do a specific thing, such as music. Or journalism. Or robotics. Other parents buy this voucher, and then the child can come to the shift, not even knowing its name and direction. Both these groups of children have different motivation and interest in joint activities. “Put your tune away, don’t disturb my sleep, I came to rest,” says the roommate.
But counselors and creatives come, and creativity begins. The one without a pipe also becomes part of the orchestra - selflessly plays, for example, on bottles. Giving concerts! And who will be more creative in the end, another question.
There is no difference in attitude towards those who came by competition and those who were bought a ticket. Teamwork erases any boundaries. The first three days of the shift we do laundry. We erase the boundaries between children.
Listen to those who have experienced good.
Children are rushing to the camp. But among the media characters, not everyone agrees to come to speak to them. The star of previous generations says something like: I would go to Los Angeles, but not to Anapa. Banderos used to sing about such people:
She would like to live in Manhattan
And share secrets with Demi Moore... well, when, when...
You can invite performers who are collected in the playlists of the guys to perform. But we are looking for people with a special history.
For example, Viktor Ivanov, the lead singer of the Zhara group, a participant in the selection of the Voice Channel One program, organized a project to work with children with disabilities, created a musical group with them. Man brings good to the world. Or Stas More, a participant in the New Wave contest in Sochi. Everyone knows him, he is a kind person, volunteers a lot, endlessly helps everyone. There are young rising stars who bought food during the pandemic and delivered it to retirees.
We welcome such people. They are not just artists, “I'm so cool, and that's enough”, they have experience of goodness, and they can share this experience.
Children ask unexpected questions
Children always ask guests questions. We warn speakers in advance that no one selects questions on purpose, so get ready. But how do you prepare for childish spontaneity? An 11-year-old from the younger detachment gets up and asks: “What is the most important question you have not heard in your life yet?” And suddenly the star begins to sob and answers: “Will you marry me?” Maybe a journalist will not grow out of this child, but he will be able to think independently, not be afraid to ask questions, make contact, develop emotional intelligence.
Artists say that they usually get tired of interviews, they have to talk a lot, often the same thing. And performing in front of children energizes me, more than one performer has told me about this.
How to understand that the event was a success
If I see at least one child on the phone, it means that he is not interested in what is happening on stage. Unless, of course, his mother called him at that moment. Previously, the attention of children was easy to attract: music, everything is bright and loud - that's enough. Now we need to put in more effort. Provide information that is interesting.
Pandemic couldn't stop communication
Children during the pandemic continued to be creative - they learned new dances and learned acting skills with the help of videos that we began to shoot for them and publish on our pages in social networks. After the removal of quarantine restrictions, we decided not to stop the process and continue to post master classes on the Internet. The child leaves the shift, but continues to learn from his masters. We even send them prizes in the mail.
They also win prizes at international film competitions. The "Children's Film Academy" works in "Change". And here, too, their idols: Kurosawa, Kim Ki-duk, Tarantino, Kantemir Balagov - all the stars of world and Russian cinema.
Everyone knows that now you can make a movie with just a mobile phone. And even people want to watch it. And they will even give him high awards. But few parents think that their child is capable of this right in childhood.
And he is capable. For the fifth year in a row, the International Children's Film Festival "Cinema kids" has been held in St. Petersburg. Last year there were presented 320 films created by children from different cities of Russia, neighboring countries and Europe. "Children's Film Academy" presented 9short films and received prizes for the best screenplay, the award for the best actress, silver and the Grand Prix.
If an artist is called, you have to go before they are closed again in quarantine
The pandemic also showed artists that they should not postpone meeting with the audience. Sitting in quarantine, the musicians were ready to sing and play online for anyone. So now, if you are called, you have to go. Until the next wave of something like that, infectious. There are good spectators in the camp.
An artist arrives at a children's center, and here everyone has a hashtag in their hands. And each little one can either promote you or push you. "Show me your palms!" - shouted the artists from the stage in the old days. "Draw your hashtags!" - wants to say each of them now. When a camp has tens of thousands of subscribers on VKontakte alone, when an artist is greeted at a concert by 2,000 children, and each of them is ready to write about this meeting on social networks, such advertising for a guest performer works well.
How to get the Moscow metro to Anapa
Every Muscovite and guest of the capital who descended into the subway knows what great musicians sometimes play there. Now they are united in the Music in the Metro program supported by the Moscow Department of Culture. We invite these musicians to perform in front of the children in Smena. And they always have something to tell about the thorny path of the artist. But they also know how to inspire children.
