Midwife. Happiness to order (season 3) - description of episodes
Midwife. Side effect (Season 4) - episode description
Read on SoapTV.ru 6 Jul 0 2822 Yulia Shushailo, head of AFPB*: The current type of perinatal care for a woman, very common in the world, is doula assistance. A new, interesting word, which has become more and more common in the context of childbirth, is often misinterpreted by parents and even doctors. It is especially strange when people who provide services at home and call themselves doulas present themselves this way. This is how people are misinformed that a doula is supposedly an alternative name for the so-called "spiritual midwives." However, this is not at all the case. The peculiarity of being accompanied by a doula is that she accepts and supports any decision of a woman, she works on the principle of non-intervention in childbirth and focuses her efforts on comfort mother. This unique approach gained its well-deserved fame after long and terrible years of aggressive childbirth, where the woman was absolutely powerless, experimented on, she was rude or even physically abused. Help from a doula is a rehabilitation for an immoral and unjust past, a return to the original values of humanity, the chanting of motherhood, worship of the sacrament of childbirth and the work that every woman who gives birth to a child does. This is in many ways close to the alternative approach of home midwives, but by no means identifies their activity with the work of a doula. A doula must not be skilled in neonatal resuscitation, obstetrics, and emergency techniques, and must not receive the baby, protect the perineum, listen to the heartbeat, or manage bleeding during labor. The doula does not exactly prescribe or cancel any drugs prescribed by other specialists. However, the doula supports the woman in her desire to give birth, for example, by natural means, and must be informed about the benefits and risks of certain obstetric interventions so that her client's choice is informed. Such a “natural approach” is, of course, also close to the ideology of home obstetrics. However, this does not mean at all that a doula can replace a midwife or vice versa. The doula takes care of the comfort of the mother, the midwife takes care of the safety of her and the baby. These two goals often force the specialist to choose one or the other, and then, of course, the midwife is primarily concerned with safety. And the doula will continue to deal with the feelings of the woman and provide all kinds of support. In global practice (in particular, in WHO recommendations), a woman is free to choose a place for childbirth on her own, based on an informed choice. A woman may want to give birth where she thinks she will be safer. The doula does not have the right to decide for the woman where she wants to give birth, moreover, if there is no objective, proven danger for this (for example, in the case of placenta previa or the transverse position of the child ...), she must support the client in any of her decisions. Therefore, it does not matter for a doula where to support her client - it can be this or that maternity hospital, with or without a contract doctor, it can be the client's home or another place that seems suitable to her. However, if the birth takes place outside the hospital, a qualified birth attendant is required, as a doula cannot assist in the event of a complication or advise the client about her physical condition in the event of a pathology. Such cases, fortunately, rarely happen, but if they do, they can cost your health dearly. Be careful! Certification implies not only high-quality and ethical work of a doula, but also relieves you of the possibility of getting into a difficult situation due to the incompetence of a hired specialist. The health of the child and your health are the most compelling arguments for people who do their work efficiently and are clearly aware of their place in the process. This does not apply to people who spontaneously distribute their services and care more about profit. Even if it is covered with very impressive phrases about spirituality, responsibility and God's provision. All these things are, of course, incredibly important in terms of parenthood and childbirth in particular, but healthy constructivism and a competent weighing of benefits and risks are also important. There is such a phenomenon in the international community that one profession grows out of another. So a woman who has been accompanying childbirth for a long time begins to feel the need or vocation to become a midwife. Since the work of a midwife is more invasive and carries with it, no doubt, a more intensive penetration into the process. It should be said that the work of a doula, although it seems superficial, actually requires a rare quality for a modern woman - a deep respect for the needs and path of another person.
A doula is not a home midwife!
Thesis 1. A doula provides informational, practical and psychological assistance to a woman in childbirth
Thesis 2. A doula accompanies a woman in childbirth, but does not conduct labor in any way (as a doctor) and does not attend labor (as a midwife)
Thesis 3. Place for childbirth
Thesis 4. The fact that a person offers his services as a doula in the context of home birth only indicates a lack of professionalism and, moreover, even a lack of awareness of what exactly he is offering
Thesis 5. The doula and the midwife
