What is Elf on the Shelf?
Year after year, children and adults alike are baffled by the mystery of how Santa really knows who’s been naughty or nice. After much urging by the elves and Mrs. Claus, Santa has allowed his biggest secret to be revealed in The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition. At the start of each Christmas season, the elf appears to serve as Santa’s eyes and ears, traveling back to the North Pole each and every night to make a detailed report of the day’s activities. Children can register their elf online to receive an official adoption certificate and a special letter from Santa.

Helpful tips on Elf on the Shelf “issues”
What to say when kids see the Elf in the store
One issue we ran into is that our kids saw the Elf in the hallmark store. While I don’t like to lie to my kids I do like the magic to stay alive. We told them that elves in stores are knock offs. We let them know they are not the real elves with magic. And that the magic is in the Elf that is just for our house. It worked for us.
What to say if your kids ask why their friends don’t have an elf
We have told ours there is a waitlist for the elves, and that it is long. So they know that not every child will have one because they have to get off the waitlist. We don’t want other kids to feel bad that they don’t have their own Elf. But I also know that not every parent is going to do Elf on the Shelf. We want to make sure they don’t mention elf in school and hurt other kids feelings who do not have an elf.
It also keeps the magic alive in our house because no one is telling them it is a fake thing or that they don’t have one.
My daughter has also told me one of her friends was sad about not having an Elf. I know it is not always in the budget for everyone and the waitlist idea helped. My daughter made her feel better by telling her that there is a waitlist for Elves and that maybe she would get off the waitlist soon.

Elf on the Shelf: How to explain to kids why there is no Elf this year
Are you giving Elf a rest this year? (Picture: Getty/Yulia Reznikov)Elf on the Shelf is back again for another year.
But while the arrival of the festive toy is exciting for children, it can be a bit of a nightmare for some adults.
In fact, many parents have been revealing their frustrations over the tradition this year.
December can be an extremely busy time for anyone with kids in their lives, what with school holidays, presents and events to prepare for – so finding the time to come up with different Elf on the Shelf ideas can be pretty exhausting.
So it’s only natural for parents to want to give it a break this year, or for some to stop halfway through the month.
But how do you explain to kids why there is no more Elf this year? Here are some things to keep in mind…
Come up with a funny reason why Elf isn’t here
If your children are still young and have wild imaginations, there’s no reason why you can’t come up with a fun reason why Elf isn’t about this year.
Also if you don’t want to ruin the magic that you are moving the Elf around each night, then this is a great option.
Some suggestions from parents include:
- Say Elf is isolating due to Covid
- Tell a child they don’t need an Elf as they are already on the nice list
- Say Elf had an allergic reaction and had to head to the North Pole
- Explain that Santa is running low on Elves this year
- Say Elf is in the hospital at the North pole, so Santa can fix him
Get creative and write a postcard
‘A wonderful idea is to write a letter or a postcard from the Elf explaining that he has left to go on an adventure – but it’s up to the family to find out just what the adventure entails,’ says education expert and former headteacher Leon Hady, who is the founder of Guide Plus.
‘This is perfect for capturing the imagination of your children and encouraging them to think together about where he could be going, who he might meet and see and how he will continue to spread the magic.’
Be honest
Depending on whether your children are old enough to know that Elf is moved about by parents, you could explain that you simply don’t have time this year.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to reveal too much, you could say that you’re too busy to host Elf in your home this year.

Point out other things you’re doing instead
Lots of families are jumping on Elf on the Shelf this year, but many don’t do it at all.
So while a child might ask why lots of their friends are doing Elf on the Shelf, you could explain that your family have other traditions instead – whether it’s Christmas film nights, winter walks or trips to special places.
By pointing out other positive things you do – that other families might not – it won’t make the lack of Elf seem like a disappointment or a loss.
And, if you don’t have one, suggest making a tradition.
‘This might be playing a Christmas family board game, making some decorations or planning out acts of kindness over the festive period such as sorting out toys for children more in need,’ adds Leon.
Encourage kids to make their own
As a parent it’s likely you already have lot of things on your plate during December, but there’s no reason why kids still can’t get involved in the fun.
You could encourage your children to make their own Elf and make them get up to different things each day – that way the pressure is taken off the adults.

What is the elf doing on the shelf?
One of the Christmas traditions in Ireland and many other countries that children love is the appearance of the Elf on the shelf.
The elf usually arrives between November 24th and December 1st. This time among the children is known as the week of the return of the scout elves, that is, the time when Santa's little helpers flee the North Pole and head to the houses in which they will live until Christmas.
Usually parents start this tradition when the child is 2 or 3 years old. nine0005 Some kids who already know how to write leave a welcome letter for their elf. Others, since the installation of the Christmas tree, simply call him, inviting and luring him with some sweets.
Children tend to give names to everyone at once. Here is a list of common elf names:0012
In our family it so happened that our elves (we have two of them - the boy Elfie and the girl Blueberry) always appear for the first time on the Christmas tree, which, according to Irish traditions, is already dressed up at the end of November for the Evening Toy Show. On their last day, December 24, the elves also “star” on her crown or in the place where gifts are expected, so that it would be easier for Santa to pick them up. It is on this day that the espionage work of the elves ends, when Santa makes the final decision - whether the child falls into the list of good or bad and whether to leave gifts under the tree. nine0007 Elf disguises himself as Santa
American writer Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell come up with a wonderful story in verse, which is told in The Elf On The Shelf. A Christmas Tradition, 2005) with colorful pictures. She explains how Santa Claus knows who is naughty and who is good. This tradition was created in order to encourage children to behave in the best way at least on the eve of Christmas. nine0007
What should parents do with the Elf on the shelf?
The main task of the Elf on the shelf is to look after the children on the eve of Santa's visit. These are scouts who report to the boss about the behavior of the children living in this house, which is why they are also called "scout elves" or "scout elves"). They have to move around the house every night (not during the day!). And in the morning the children run around all the rooms in search of a Christmas guest, wondering “where did he hide?”, “Did he act up?”, “What did he do last night?” nine0007 Elf in captivity of toys
Therefore, during this period, parents should show maximum imagination in order to come up with interesting places, plots and scenes for the elf's unique actions. And most importantly - do not forget to do this EVERY night!
The elf is lost in the couchI recommend a few sites with ideas about what elves can do:0032
You must remember and follow the rules regarding the elf on the shelf.
The most important and most important rule number 1 . Do not touch your elf, otherwise he will lose his magic! If the elf has not moved by morning, it is possible that someone accidentally touched him and he lost his energy. Now he can't go back to the North Pole or hide and joke and make new scenes. The elf scout has become an ordinary toy.
Regulation 2 . Elves are scouts and cannot speak, but they are excellent listeners. Toddlers can share secrets and desires with their elf as often as they like. They can exchange notes. nine0007
I also advise you to watch the film Elf (2003) with your children. It clearly mentions the first rule of the Elven Code -
"Treat every day like Christmas."
How to say goodbye to an elf
On the eve of Christmas, you can just say goodbye to an elf and express hope for a meeting next year.
For a more formal farewell, you can pack the elf in a box, write "To the North Pole" on it and stick any stamp on it. Of course, you don’t need to carry it to the post office, but explain to the child that he is going on a trip to a very cold and distant place in order to restore his magical energy for the next season. nine0007
Elves usually come to visit as adults, so 100 years old, and can live up to 750 years. Therefore, the same elf visits the family from year to year.
In stores, including online, there are now a lot of sets, books, clothes and games with elves. For lovers of screens and gadgets, I recommend the site elfontheshelf.com, where the parent can find useful information about the “Elf on the Shelf”, and the child can spend hours plunging into the world of Christmas.
Merry Christmas and playful elves! nine0032

Elf on the Shelf and Ugly Sweaters
From Thanksgiving until Christmas, some American parents play Elf on the Shelf with their children. Every night the elf figurine is moved to a new place, and the children need to find it. The elf, as it were, watches how the child behaves, reports everything to Santa, and it depends on how good a gift the child will receive for Christmas. nine0005 Some parents seem to get even more enjoyment out of staging elf adventures than their child and elf put together:
, a treat for a dog))
And if there are not enough ideas for all the days before Christmas, you can always google "elf on the shelf" and the world community will help. nine0007
Elf-on-the-Shelf is also played in Gabriel's office, each person moves the doll in turn on the assigned day and creates an adventure story. And after all adults all people!
It seems to me that such a game can be played in our CIS realities, just replace an elf that is not familiar to our children with any toy. And here elves are bought specially in stores.
You can order an elf: "For 100 bucks an hour, I will come to your holiday party dressed as an Elf on the Shelf and sit in any place you assign me, staring blankly at your guests throughout the evening " nine0007
And by the way, yes, initially the shelf from which the elf must watch the child and knock on Santa is the fireplace shelf, as in the photo above.
And then there is the tradition of wearing Christmas sweaters, and the worse the better. There are parties or special days at work where you have to show up in the most ridiculous, ugly, awkward Christmas-themed sweater.
"It's the season to be ugly":
Families make their Christmas cards by wearing ugly sweaters for them; presenters conduct programs in ridiculous sweaters. Everyone is fooling around and falling into childhood. Isn't that great? People are able. nine0007
For this season, special departments are opening in stores where these treasures are sold: Ugly Christmas Sweaters from Kohl`s online precisely ridiculous, anti-sexual, worst dressed! Look funny and let yourself be laughed at. It's great therapy, I think. No, I definitely need something like that, if not for this Christmas already, then for the next one for sure. nine0007
In general, Christmas sweaters are sold even on aliexpress. This is if you want to join this tradition in those countries - like my own - where they just don’t sell such sweaters in stores: aliexpress
And I also told, using the example of my mother-in-law, that they wear funny Christmas earrings here.
