How to be a child detective
How to Start a Detective Business | Small Business
By Jordan Meyers
Starting a detective business can be an interesting and rewarding endeavor. This business can be a good fit for someone with a background in law enforcement, the military or even security. However, you can start this business without such a background by securing related training. The path you will have to take to start this business will depend on where you are located but usually involves obtaining licensing and finding ways to reach out to those in need of your services.
-
Check with your secretary of state's office or the department of licenses and Inspections in your jurisdiction to learn whether licensing is required in your state. Some states regulate detective agencies while others do not. In some places, you may need a background in the military or law enforcement to obtain licensing. In lieu of such a background, you may meet licensing criteria by taking a private investigations course or gaining experience as an employee of a detective agency. You may be required to submit to a criminal background check as well.
-
Get trained in self-defense and firearms use if you do not already have this type of training. In some states, this is necessary for licensing. If your state does not set such requirements, you may find such training beneficial. You may eventually need it to protect yourself.
-
Take a private investigations course that covers surveillance, computer investigations, and detective paperwork and reports. The course you take should also cover detective equipment. You can find such courses online, at some community colleges and through some trade schools.
-
Decide the types of investigations in which you want to specialize. For example, you may focus on cheating spouse cases or work to help companies detect internal theft. While you can provide general detective services, focusing on a niche may make marketing your business easier.
-
Apply for a business license. Most states will require you to obtain a business license, even if you operate a home-based business. This is separate from any private investigation licensing requirements.
-
Create and market a website for your detective business. Add content that includes keywords related to your detective business to make it easier for people to find you through the search engines. Use your new website address in all of your marketing materials.
-
Market your business through online and newspaper ads as well as listings in local telephone directories. Network with law enforcement officials as well. They may contract work out to you or refer customers to you from time to time. Radio and television ads may also help you attract customers. If television ads are beyond your budget, consider cable television ads. They are often cheaper.

Tips
- Purchase used equipment when you are just starting your business. This will help you keep your startup budget manageable. Once your business is profitable, you can reinvest in it by purchasing new equipment.

What Does a Detective Do? – Smarty Pants Magazine for Kids

Are you a bit “snoopy?”
Then you may be interested today’s career.
A detective’s primary job is to uncover evidence and search for clues. These people use their skills to solve crimes.
A detective can be hired to watch a person or people. Sometimes the individual may be involved in a crime. Other times, a detective may be hired to find a missing relative or friend.
In corporations, detectives will scour financial records and digital files looking for possible wrongdoing.
Though the settings can be different, the spirit of the work – discovering clues to create a whole picture – is all part of being a detective.
What Do I Need to Be a Detective?Let’s “uncover” more about this exciting career.
The first thing you will need to be a detective is a great appreciation for helping people. You should also be very detail-oriented and observant.
Here are some other qualities most detectives have;
- Possess a personal intuition about situations or people
- Logical thinking
- A charismatic personality
- The ability to communicate effectively with people who may not want to share information
- Be technological savvy – using cameras, understanding computer forensics, and operating a wiretap, using handcuffs, polygraphs, and fingerprinting
- Physical stamina
- Ability to do many tasks at one time
In most cases, detectives need to have at least a high school diploma. However, a college or university degree is often considered an asset.
In school, you will want to focus on the areas of criminology, forensics, and even business courses.
For many, though, hands-on experience is worth more than book learning. Most detectives start out as rookie police officers or work as assistants to private detectives to build up their basic skills.
What Can I Do as a Detective?Once you have become a detective, there are many areas where you can work. These include;
Private InvestigatorThese people often solve mysteries or settle personal disputes on a per-case basis. As a “PI” you may track down someone’s biological parent or do surveillance (“spy”) on a particular individual.
Many private investigators uncover details of a crime (but usually only after a case has gone “cold”). A family of a missing or deceased person might engage the services of a private investigator to continue searching for clues. These inquiries might pose possible solutions to a crime or provide enough evidence for police to reopen a case.
Police WorkSome detectives work for the police station. This type of career will have you visiting crime scenes, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing lab reports, and suspect profiles.
This type of detective will assist other investigators in narrowing down a suspect or piecing together an unknown series of events. He or she can also sometimes be responsible for making arrests. In some cases, detectives must testify in court about their findings, beliefs, and processes.
Corporate DetectivesLarge corporations occasionally hire detectives. Here you would conduct internal investigations in cases of suspected fraud or embezzlement (taking company money that does not belong to you). Good detectives can piece through the paperwork to determine if anything is amiss
Law firms may also keep detectives on staff to help attorneys. In major trials, there is often a lot of paperwork and electronic data that needs to be sorted, and evaluated. While lawyers can do this work, a detective’s expertise is better suited to identifying potential “question areas.”
Is Being a Detective the Right Career for You?Becoming a detective will take a lot of hard work and determination. But just think, once you become a detective, you may find a missing person or even put a bad guy in jail.

The Rules of a Young Detective, or How to Outdo Poirot

Olesya Akhmedzhanova
The fame of famous detectives haunts the younger generation. Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, Miss Marple - they all effortlessly solved the most complicated cases. Well, why not organize your own team, which will have a mysterious name and help catch criminals? Meet the book about the adventures of the Black Hand.
There are 4 detective stories and 60 riddles in the book. Of course, we could not resist and immediately read it. And they wrote rules that will be useful to those who are just starting their detective work.
A detective must be inquisitive
Young detectives are simple schoolchildren. Felix is the oldest, he knows how to play the alarm on the trumpet. Next to him is a smart girl Adele, Rollo in a striped turtleneck, and Kiki, on whose shoulder sits B. - a little squirrel. The guys organize the "Black Hand" society and constantly encounter unexpected situations: either smoke comes from a chimney in a once empty castle, or jewelry is stolen from a rich lady. Friends get into a detective story even while traveling to their uncle. And having decided to take a walk in the zoo, the detectives find out why someone is stealing defenseless animals.
Perhaps someone would not have noticed these occurrences. But our heroes love to ask questions and find answers. Who stole the antique necklace? Why is a stranger hiding in an abandoned house? Why was the panther and the parrot kidnapped?
A detective must be brave
Inspired by the great Hercule Poirot, schoolchildren catch the most inventive criminals.
They scrutinize evidence, keep an eye on suspects, and are not afraid of anything.
The brave heroes chase the strange man on bicycles, descend into the stalactite cave and dive into the lake for clues. To overcome cunning and treacherous scoundrels, you need to be brave.
A detective must be attentive
Solving mysteries is not as easy as it seems. The characters are investigating and noticing the details: clothes, a suitcase, a band-aid, even the name of a movie in a cinema.
The reader will also have to try: the clues are hidden in the illustrations, which must be carefully studied.
You can't do without logical thinking here: you need to connect all the facts, build a chain of evidence and guess where, for example, the criminal hid an old necklace in the cellar.
The illustrations for the book were drawn by Hans Jürgen Press, a German illustrator, inventor of Wimmelbuchs. Wimmelbuch is a book with only pictures without text. They have a lot of details, they train attention and memory. In The Adventures of the Black Hand, it is also not at all easy to find the right evidence.
But with each mystery solved, the child notices important details faster and faster.
Why the book is useful
"The Adventures of the Black Hand" not only entertains, but also develops.
- Teaches you how to think and answer questions . Why did the man buy a ticket for this particular train? Who is the most suspicious in the carriage? Why would anyone want a talking parrot? Children can find answers themselves - give them the opportunity to think carefully and do not prompt.
- Focus on the details . There are no random things in detective stories. If the detective notices a scratch on the face of the suspect, then thanks to it he will recognize him in the crowd. Secret doors, forgotten suitcases, trousers of the right color - the young detective must observe and carefully study the details that will help solve the crime.
- Broadens one's horizons. Why does sugar smell like almonds? How are animals transported? What is a stalactite cave? The detective, like a fun encyclopedia, is full of all sorts of educational information.
All tasks earn points. At the end of the book, the reader will find out who he is: a student, an assistant, or a real detective. There is something to strive for!
"The Adventures of the Black Hand" will be of interest to all lovers of mysterious stories. Be brave, attentive and inquisitive - and you will certainly unravel any, even the most difficult case.

Children's detective stories that adults will love
Each of these detective stories is the beginning of a large book series. So we warn you: addiction and even addiction are possible, both in children and in their parents.

An excellent book that you can choose to get acquainted with the detective genre. Children of six or seven years old will follow with great interest the adventures of a big toad and a little mouse - the famous commissioner Gordon, the storm of all forest criminals, and his assistant Zhabi. There is a crime in this story, and an attempt to mislead the investigation, and a chase - in a word, everything that should be in a real detective, but also kindness, respect and sympathy for those who are weaker.
“The Commissar raised his index finger, and the little squirrel fell silent. Sometimes the commissioner felt that he was simply forced to interrupt the interlocutor.
- How many nuts do you have in total?
“Fifteen thousand seven hundred and four,” blurted out the little squirrel. Fifteen thousand seven hundred four.
The Commissioner nodded.
“Everyone should be fine in our forest,” he said. “Crimes should not go unpunished. But if someone is in trouble, if he is dizzy from hunger and needs to eat something as soon as possible so as not to faint, we must treat this with understanding. We must be generous. We all".

The first book in Maisie Hitchins' girl detective series. The series is ideal for children of eight or nine years old who are interested in everything mysterious and unusual. In the first part, the heroine meets her future true friend, dog Eddie, and unravels her first case. A special charm to the texts of the modern British writer is given by the fact that all the events take place in England of the 19th century, and, according to experts, the details of that era are conveyed quite reliably.
“- All great detectives have devoted assistants. Gilbert Carrington, for example, has Major Edward Lamb. The Morning Post wrote that he has a cane with a folding sword and twice saved the life of Gilbert Carrington. Although Mr. Carrington himself had saved his life probably hundreds of times. The girl looked at the puppy, who sneezed when he bumped into something by the gutter. “Perhaps you will save me someday…”

The author of this book has repeatedly said that she writes for children from nine to nine9 years. Follow the investigation, led by two experienced detectives - the Big Badger of the Far Forest Police and his assistant Badgercat - a real pleasure at any age. Around each, even minor, character, the author builds a whole world where every detail is important: from a definitely speaking name to gastronomic preferences (the attentive reader will find many hidden clues in the text). Solving puzzles together with the heroes of Anna Starobinets will be interesting for both children and adults, and the latter, by the way, will surely like the author's sense of humor and quite recognizable situations.
“- What kind of discount is this? - the Muskrat was dumbfounded.
— This very discount, — the second lawyer replied caustically. - Your customer is large and poor. According to the Animal Welfare Law, she is entitled to a discount.
— Well, that's it, — Muskrat nodded sourly. - Twelve shisha per square meter, with a discount it turns out ten shisha ...
- You said that a square meter costs ten sheesh! - Sychi Advocates and Zaychikha shouted in unison.
- And the price, that's the thing, has grown, - Desman spread his clawed paws. — But I will give you a discount. It turns out ten shisha.

These are no longer children's detective stories, but rather teenage ones. Their heroes are simply masters of getting into stupid situations. Here you have a bad company, and the first unrequited love, and a stupid escape from home. Plus a secret prophecy and a famously twisted plot. All this is enough to keep the reader from getting bored on the second page.
"Sorry, good animals," Konstantin squeezed out, trying to catch his breath. - Let me in the house, huh?
The fox and the penguin looked at each other in surprise.
— Allow me one question, — the fox addressed Konstantin. — Are you unhappy?
- Uh-uh ... And what is the correct answer?
- Only honest!
- Then yes! How unhappy! All the police and all the crime in the city are chasing me to arrest and kill me! Am I unhappy, ha ha! Yes, I am so unhappy that all other unfortunates will die of envy!
- If everything is so serious, what are we standing for! the fox exclaimed. - Hurry to the house!
With these words, Ulysses opened the door, let Evgeny and Konstantin go ahead, followed by himself and solemnly said:
- I'm glad to announce that all the unfortunates are here! And that's great!"

The first part of the trilogy, the heroine of which, an ordinary St. Petersburg teenager Nina, together with her family finds herself at the epicenter of a detective story. One day her mother just doesn't come home from work. For three long years, all the adults around are stubbornly silent. Nina does not dream of conducting an investigation, quite the contrary, but the strange behavior of others and mysterious text messages make her act. Quite an adult plot, full of not only events, but also vivid psychological images.
“It was all too implausible. It could happen in movies or in detective stories, but not with me, an ordinary teenager, not with my dad, an ordinary programmer. We were surrounded by ordinary people and ordinary things. We went to school, to work and made coffee for breakfast. They washed dishes, hung out on social networks, cut off labels from new socks. Even knowing that this was actually the case, I could not believe that for some reason a listening device had been installed on dad's broken-down smartphone. I would never have thought that right here, on my desk, littered with papers and books, someone had attached a bug.
