With the release of the Hearthfire DLC, players will be able to adopt oprhan boys and girls found in Skyrim's various cities.
There are few things that need to happen before you can adopt a child of your own.
advertisement
You can't adopt a kid until you have a house, and have completed Innocence Lost. After Grelod The Kind is dead you will get a letter from Constance Michel saying that she is in charge of the Honorhall Orphanage now, as well as asking you to adopt a kid.
LoadingAny time after this point you can go to the orphanage and adopt a kid. He/she will then move into your house just like a spouse would.
To start with you can only adopt the kids who are in the orphanage, how ever after you are able to adopt kids, the game will send the children of any slain NPC's to Honorhall Orphanage where you can adopt them.
There is an exception to this rule: An alternative to this is finding a beggar child anywhere in Skyrim (usually in a town). For example, a new NPC brought in from hearthfire is Lucia who is seen begging in Whiterun. You can talk to her and adopt her then and there as long as you have a childrens bedroom in one of your houses.
you can also replace one of your rooms in your house for a children's bedroom but be warned that if you want to change its back you must pay a little pay.
Your children can also give you things in the world but if you adopt a child who find things for example the child in windhelm finds flower and sells them so if you adopt her, she will have a bigger chance of find things. Children can also find pets and you can let him or her keep the pet or not so constantly check on your kids for things.
Warningadvertisement
your kids can die from attacks - so it is recomended they do not stay in a house alone. Consider moving your adoptive children to a hold with wall like whiterun or windhelm and so on but if you have a housecarl he or she can protect your kids from enemy attacks.
Your kids can get in an fight but mostly happen with the same gender. You can put one of them to blame, but if you have a wife living with your kids she will keep them calm.
In order to adopt you must have the Hearthfire DLC downloaded.

Prerequisites
In order to adopt a child, either a house with a children's bedroom, or a homestead furnished with a bed and a chest is required.
In a homestead, a child's bed can be fitted in the Bedrooms or a single bed fitted in the Main Hall. When in the Main Hall the dresser in between the two single beds counts as a chest for both possible children. Otherwise, if there are two child beds, there must be two child chests. If there are two beds but one chest, adoption will still not be allowed. Additionally, even if there are more than two beds and two chests available (as with multiple homes), a maximum of two children can be adopted by the Dragonborn.
Adoptable children
Children may be adopted either from cities, where they can be found roaming the streets, or from Honorhall Orphanage in Riften.
Cities
Lucia, an adoptable child in Whiterun
Adopting a child from a city simply requires asking them about their circumstances. After this, they can be asked if they would like to be adopted. If the prerequisites are met, they will display their gratitude and arrange to meet the Dragonborn back home.
Children who can be found in cities are:
- Alesan (♂) – In Dawnstar near the mines.
- Blaise (♂) – Just outside Solitude at Katla's Farm.
- Lucia (♀) – In Whiterun near the Gildergreen.
- Sofie (♀) – In Windhelm, Gray Quarter.
Honorhall Orphanage
Adopting a child from Honorhall Orphanage is only possible if the quest "Innocence Lost" has been completed and the headmistress, Grelod the Kind, is dead. Constance Michel takes over and sends out a letter urging people to consider adoption.
If choosing to adopt from Honorhall, she will be pleased but is required to first ask a few questions, one of which is what the Dragonborn's occupation is. The following answers are possible:
- I'm the Dragonborn.
- I'm Harbinger of the Companions.
- I'm Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold.
- I'm a Thief.
- I'm an Assassin.
- I'm an Adventurer.
- I'm a Mercenary.
Replying as Dragonborn, Harbinger or Arch-Mage will result in disbelief and eventually amazement from Constance. Thief and Assassin results in her complaining about wasting her time and Adventurer and Mercenary are met with indifference.
She then asks where the child will be living. If a suitable home is owned, including a child's bed and chest, then it will appear as a possible reply. Choose a home and she'll congratulate the Dragonborn on becoming a parent. She then asks that the Dragonborn can go meet the children and decide who to adopt.
The children who are available by default are:
- Runa Fair-Shield (♀)
- Hroar (♂)
- Samuel (♂)
- Francois Beaufort (♂)
If the prerequisites are not met, she will refuse adoption, mentioning that the life of an adventurer is not exactly a safe or reliable profession. She needs to be sure the child will have a safe and stable home to grow up in. She finishes by urging the Dragonborn to buy a house and furnish it, and then come back.
Other
Other children from across Skyrim are sent to Honorhall Orphanage if their parents die. Once they are at Honorhall, they can be adopted. Alternatively, one may be able to adopt them on the spot before they're sent to the orphanage. These children include:
Name | Location | Required NPC deaths |
---|---|---|
Aeta (♀) DR | Skaal Village | Oslaf, Finna |
Braith (♀) | Whiterun | Amren, Saffir |
Britte (♀) | Rorikstead | Lemkil |

If the child's parents are killed by the Dragonborn and the crime is noted by the guards or observed by the child, adoption may not be possible. Children may be "aware" that their parents were killed by the Dragonborn even if the crime was committed while hidden, rendering adoption impossible.
It is possible, however, to guarantee adoption after killing a child's parents. Immediately after committing the crime, by bribing the guards and Calming the child for a certain period, it is possible for children to reach the "acceptance" phase, when it becomes possible to open dialogue with them again. They say things such as "(sigh)," and "What...what am I gonna do?" and at this point, it becomes possible to adopt them.
It seems there is limited space in the orphanage, it can hold eleven children altogether, including the four that have always lived there. If the orphaned child doesn't show up at Honorhall within a few days, they likely are still in the place they originally lived.
Interactions
Once a child has been adopted, they will tell the Dragonborn that they will go to their new home. Once there, there are a few possible interactions that can be made with them. These include:
- Giving them gifts, which grants "The Gift of Charity." Giftable items include:
- A dagger or wooden sword.
- A child's doll, which children will occasionally play with.
- An item of children's clothing
- A children's book such as the Yellow Book of Riddles, The Red Book of Riddles, A Children's Anuad, and Kolb and the Dragon
- A treat such as a sweet roll or an apple.
- Playing a game with them, such as tag or hide-and-seek.
- Telling them to play outside or inside
- Telling them to do their chores
- Telling them to go to sleep
- Telling them they may or may not keep a pet
Gifts
Occasionally, an adopted child may give their parent a gift. These include:
- 1–9
- A treat such as a sweet roll or an apple.
- Clothing
- Alchemy ingredients
- Jewelry
- A weapon:
- Any dagger (note that the wooden sword is regarded as a dagger)
- Long bow
- Hunting bow
- Staff of Courage
- Staff of Flames
- Staff of the Healing Hand
- Staff of Mending
- Staff of Calm
- A piece of ore
- A precious gem
- A soul gem
- Any rare book, including Boethiah's Proving
- A potion:
- Any restore health potion
- Any restore magicka potion
- Any restore stamina potion
- Any resist magic potion
- Any invisibility potion
- Potion of Waterwalking DR
Behavior
- If a child has a chest near their bed, they will store ingredients, food and other items that the Dragonborn can take.
- Sometimes, an adopted child may show up with a small animal such as a fox or a skeever, asking if they can keep it as a pet.
- If the Dragonborn brings a dog follower (such as Meeko or a stray dog) when visiting an adopted child, the child may ask to adopt the dog. However, it is not possible to adopt Barbas, a death hound, or a non-canine animal follower such as an armored troll.
- An adopted child with a dagger or wooden sword will use their weapon on a practice dummy, if one is available.
- If two children are adopted, they will sometimes play with each other or argue, in which case they can be scolded.
- An adopted child may say that they are afraid to go down into the cellar as something is down there.
- An adopted child may ask for an allowance. The options presented are to give a varying amount, from 5 up to 1,000 . The child's response differs depending on the amount given.
- Adopted children have unique comments for each of the Hearthfire homes and the houses in the different cities. They will comment on local children they have played with, or places in the city they have visited. They will also comment on whether or not they like the house or city they are living in. The only house all children openly love and have no complaints about is Lakeview Manor.
- If The Elder Scrolls V: Dragonborn is installed and the Dragonborn has a Riekling as a follower, adopted children will comment on it, saying they seem really tough or really scary.
Moving
An adopted child can be moved to a different home. The dialog option "It’s time for us to move" is used which opens a list of eligible homes. The child will respond with "Okay, I'll meet you there," when the new location is selected (if the move is cancelled, the child will respond with "Aw, stop teasing me."). The child will be at the new home when it is next visited. Any pet the child has will also follow.
Trivia
- An armed child may follow the Dragonborn down to the cellar whenever the house has skeever infestations and help kill the creatures. If the child has a pet, such as a fox, the pet may also follow, but it may get killed.
- Aventus Aretino cannot be adopted.
- When the Dragonborn sleeps in the same house as their child, either the Father's Love or Mother's Love bonus is received, depending on the gender of the Dragonborn. This bonus yields a 25% additional effect when using healing potions.
- If the Dragonborn is married, they will get both the Father's/Mother's Love bonus and the Lover's Comfort bonus.
- Having children live at Honeyside in Riften allows a mass game of tag to be played with all of the children at Honorhall Orphanage. The game begins near Honorhall, where one of the Dragonborn's children should be tagged, after which the Dragonborn runs into the orphanage. If all of the children inside don't join in, this can be corrected by waiting until the game is over and then beginning another game inside the orphanage.
- With the addition of The Elder Scrolls V: Dragonborn, children may gift alchemical ingredients from Solstheim such as scathecraw, which is quite a feat since no merchant in Skyrim sells them.
- If the Dragonborn is not given the option to adopt a child when speaking to them, the following can be done on PC using the console to fix this. After selecting the child in the console to see their ID, typing "
setrelationshiprank [Child ID] 4
," followed by "setrelationshiprank player 4
," "addfac 3004290 1
" will cause the option to adopt them to appear when speaking to them. - Children are considered their own race in the console, with names such as "NordChild."
- If the received gift from a child is supposed to be some gold there is a 10% chance to receive nothing.
Bugs
This section contains bugs related to Adoption. Before adding a bug to this list, consider the following:
|
- 360 When requesting permission to adopt children from Constance Michel at the orphanage, it may be possible to send children to live at an owned house without a children's bed and cupboard.
- 360 It may not be possible to move children to an eligible house.
- 360 PS3 When a child is given new clothes, they may un-equip all clothing items in their inventory, leaving boys wearing only shorts and girls wearing their two-piece under garment.
- 360 A less drastic version of this bug involves the child removing all of their current clothes, but still equipping the clothes they are given. This means that children will wear their new clothes, but will also take off their shoes when doing so. As children cannot be given footwear, this leaves them permanently barefoot.
- 360 The Gift of Charity is sometimes not granted when a child is given a gift.
- PS3 If the Dragonborn closes out the dialog of their child before they are finished, the child will follow them and keep bringing up dialog every time the Dragonborn goes home to the child.
- Upon entering the house, an adopted child may ask to keep the Dragonborn's dog, even if they have none. Allowing the child to keep it may prevent giving a real dog to it.
- PC If "The Blessings of Nature" quest is completed, any adopted girl may say "I like it here. The tree in the park is so pretty!" even in other home locations than Whiterun.

Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) - Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The - Games - Gamer.ru: social network for gamers The addition expanded the social capabilities of the hero. For example, it became possible to build your own house, adopt children and create your own orphanage.
This post is all about the children of Skyrim and their adoption.
First, a little information about children in general, then details about each child who can be adopted, and the bugs noticed in connection with this.
Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) |
1. CHILDREN OF SKYRIM
In the Skyrim game, you can only find children of human races: Bretons, Nords, Imperials and Redguards. You won't find Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer, Orc, Argonian, or Khajiit children anywhere.
Children have neither spells nor any abilities. But they are absolutely invulnerable and never participate in battles, running away at the first sounds of battle. Yes, in Skyrim you can talk and interact with children through quests and various games (for example, play tag or hide and seek), but it is impossible to kill. And yet there is no way to commit pickpocketing, although you can see, sneaking up, what things the child has with him. This is done so that the developers cannot be accused of creating a "simulation of killing children." For the same reason, mods that make it possible to kill children are not accepted on the Steam Workshop. However, there is a "death scream" sound in the game that the game plays if a child is killed using a mod. And no matter how the “fans of realism” ask, the developers will never introduce the murder of children, if only because there are countries where legal showdowns are a sport that brings a lot of fines to those game developers who follow their clients’ lead.
Also, the game does not provide the ability to create a child character, although of course with the help of console commands or mods this is feasible.
2. WHO CAN BE ADOPTED IN THE GAME
You can go to the "Noble Orphanage" in Riften, and contact Constance Michel in the orphanage. The latter, if anyone does not remember, as a result of completing the Innocence Lost quest - to help orphans get rid of the despot-educator - becomes the "manager" of the orphanage. If the quest has not yet been completed, or you have decided to win back the “good” Dovakin and abandoned the dark brotherly line, then you will not succeed in adopting children from the orphanage, since the mischievous old woman Grelod the Kind does not even want to discuss the issue of adoption.
In addition to the children who were previously in the orphanage, after installing the Hearthfire add-on, children who were orphaned during the passage of the game (i.e. whose parents were killed) are placed there, but only after the death of Grelod. From where and can be adopted/adopted by the player character.
Aventus Aretino cannot be adopted as he will never return to the orphanage.
The addition also introduces individual orphans, whom you can meet in different cities and villages.
Below I will list all the children, both from the shelter and the vagrants and hard workers that you can adopt, as well as known bugs and ways to fix them.
Boys.
- Alisan, redguard, dunstar.
Alisan is the only child you can meet in Dawnstar. His father was a sailor, and on his last voyage to Skyrim he took him with him. On the way, the father fell ill, and the captain ordered to land him ashore with his son. A few days later, his father died, and Alisan was left alone in a cold land. He earns his living by delivering food to miners from the Mercury and Iron mines. You can meet him at work cleaning baskets, while working in the garden for the Peak of the Wind Tavern, or in the city when he runs past you.
Advice against bugs: Don't put Alysan in the Warm Winds house in Whiterun. Otherwise, Lydia, who is your Whiterun housecarl, will loop Alysan with her auto-actions, which will endlessly enter and exit through the front doors. This can be fixed by contacting the boy and telling him to take care of him, or by eliminating Lydia, but it's better not to settle him in Whiterun at all.
Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) |
- Blaise, Breton, Cattle's farm near Solitude.
Blaze's parents served in the imperial army and were killed in an ambush by the Stormcloaks. Kattla, the owner of a farm near Solitude, said she would feed him if he was useful to her, so the boy takes care of horses and runs errands. He sleeps outside in a pile of hay in a stable and says he is “tired of sleeping outside next to horses. I wish I had a real home, real parents.” After finding out these details, you can adopt him, and the child will run on his own to the house you specified with a nursery and a chest.
Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) Once in your house, Blaze first of all runs to look at the armor. |
- Francois Beaufort, Imperial, "Noble Orphanage" in Riften.
His parents left him at the orphanage about a year ago, and the boy believes that they will come back and take him away as promised. However, apparently, he was simply abandoned. After Grelod the Good is killed, he, along with other orphans, will rejoice and triumph. Like many children of Skyrim, the boy has a set of food and toys and a small amount of gold with him. His daily routine is no different from all children, and he can always be found inside the shelter.
No bugs were noticed during adoption.
- Samuel, Imperial, "Noble Orphanage" in Riften.
Nothing is known about his history. After Grelod the Good is killed, he, along with other orphans, will rejoice and triumph.
No bugs were noticed during adoption.
- Hroar, Nord, "Noble Orphanage" in Riften.
Nothing is known about his parents. He prides himself on the fact that his name is like a lion's roar. He is unhappy that Grelod the Good is preventing his adoption, although he says that he would be the "best son" in a new family. He approves of the plans of Aventus Aretino, and when Grelod the Good is killed, he triumphs along with the other orphans of the orphanage.
No bugs were noticed during adoption.
Girls.
- Lucia, Imperial, Whiterun.
Lucia can be found after installing the DLC in Whiterun, most often near the Temple of Kynareth, under the Goldenleaf tree, where she sits on one of the benches.
You can find her from 8.00 to 20.00 near Golden Leaf, from 20.00 to 00 in the Prancing Mare tavern, at midnight she goes to the backyard of the hotel and sleeps on the ground until 8.00.
She has a Beggar's Quest associated with her, so you can give her a gold coin and get a Gift of Mercy.
No bugs found.
Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) |
- Sophie, Nord, Windhelm.
A girl wanders the streets of Windhelm selling flowers in flower baskets. She is an orphan, her mother died when she was very young, and her father disappeared in the civil war between the Stormcloaks and the Imperial Legion. From 8 am to 5 pm, she will sell flowers at the back gate of Windhelm. After 5:00 p.m., she can usually be found sitting at the New Gnisis Club. At 8:00 pm, she heads to the room at the back of the Niraniya House and sleeps until 8:00 am.
Sophie, like the rest of Windhelm, has a lot of bugs.
- If you do not buy all the items she sells from her before adoption, you will not be able to give her gifts and change clothes later, as all her flower baskets will remain in the inventory.
- If all the other children, after the adoption dialogue, run on their own to your house, which has a children's room, then Sophie will remain standing even if you approach her many times. However, she will be considered adopted, and you will not be able to take another child instead.
- If you adopted Sophie before the capture of Windhelm for the Imperials, then after the capture, she may disappear from your home. In this case, you need to select the option "let's move to another house" in a conversation with another child or spouse. After the move, Sophie should appear in a new place.
- If you have lost Sophie, you can call her through the console. To do this, type prid xx004031 (where xx is the sequence number in which you installed the Hearthfire DLC), then moveto player to move it to the estate.
Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) Hearthfire. How to adopt a child in Skyrim (guide) |
- Rune Strong Shield (English "Runa Fair-Shield"), Nord, "Noble Orphanage" in Riften.
Nothing is known about her parents. At the orphanage, when you first meet, she tells you in detail about a boy named Aventus Aretino, who ran away from the orphanage. After the murder of Grelod the Good, she rejoices along with other children, and says to the hero: “By killing one person, you immediately solved so many problems for others. It’s very interesting what awaits you ahead”, as if hinting at the “dark brotherly” future of the hero.
Unfortunately, the skins of children are very uniform, and it is impossible to find any individuality in them, except that the Bretons and Imperials are brunettes, and the Nord girls are blondes. Even Retgard Alisan is a copy of any Imperial boy.
3. TERMS OF ADOPTION
Once Hearthfire is installed, a messenger may send you an adoption letter.
In order to adopt a child, you must, firstly, have your own house, and, secondly, this house must have a children's room. If this is a house you built, then you cannot move the child into it until a chest appears in the nursery in which the child will store his things.
The easiest way, in my opinion, is to create a nursery in your house in Solitude: after contacting the Jarl's assistant, the door to the new room simply appears on the third floor next to your bedroom. In most other houses, you are offered to replace the alchemy laboratory with a nursery.
It is not necessary to be married.
If you decide to adopt a child from an orphanage, you should contact Constance Michel. She will be delighted and will answer: “Yes, of course! What a wonderful surprise!” If you ask her what needs to be done for this, she will ask the name and occupation of the character. Interestingly, if you call yourself an assassin or a thief, then she will be outraged by "such jokes", and if you are an adventurer or a mercenary, then she will only say "Hmm ...". Obviously, the title of Archmage of Winterhold, Harbinger of the Companions or Dragonborn will inspire more confidence in you.
If you have houses equipped with a children's room, then a list of these houses will appear during the conversation. The same option will appear on the first adoption dialogue with any orphan in Skyrim. After you select one of the houses, there will be no choice, and the second child will automatically be sent there. However, later you can move your family to any house with an equipped children's room.
After that, Constance Michele will congratulate you and send you to choose a child: “Go meet the children and choose the one you would like to adopt. After you make a decision, I will pack their things and make sure they are in your house.”
However, if you don't have a suitable place to live, she will say, “. ..Let's be objective... You are an adventurer. This is not the safest and most reliable profession. I need to be sure that the child will grow up in a safe and secure home. Show me that you can take care of a child. Buy a house. Furnish it with furniture. Then come back and we'll talk."
After her consent, you can talk to the orphans living in the orphanage and ask them to tell about themselves, or offer them adoption. If you don't have your own home, then the adoption dialog for foster children won't even appear. If you talk to an orphan from the street, then the dialogue will take the form: "I have a house, but there is no room for you" - "Oh, okay ... Thanks anyway, I'll think about it."
4. COMMUNICATION WITH ADOPTED CHILDREN
- Gifts. When the child settles in your house, you will have the opportunity to give him gifts and play with him. You can give him "boy/girl clothes" and then he will change into it. You can give him sweets like honey, sweet roll or cakes. Girls can be given a doll, boys - a wooden sword.
- Magic. If you use magic next to a child, he will ask you to make him invisible, but since there is no way in the game to impose invisibility on another character, you cannot do this, and the child will be upset.
- Games. In the dialogue with the child, the options “let's play” appear (then you can play hide and seek or tag) and “go play outside”. If it is dark outside, then the child, although he will go out through the front door, will not appear on the street, and may disappear until the morning. In Solitude, he never joins children running down the street to play tag or hide and seek with them.
- You can ask your child to "get busy".
- Pets. Foster children can bring into your home and keep as pets different creatures. It can be rabbits, foxes, mud crabs, skeevers and even frost spiders. If you want to kill a pet, the child will try to stop you and say “Leave me / him alone!”, And if you kill him, he will be offended and say “I will not talk to you anymore!”.
