- You’re officially into the first trimester.
- The countdown continues: You've got 35 weeks to go!
What happens during the 5th week of pregnancy?
- You missed something: If you haven’t already noticed, you may be late with your period. It’s time to head to the pharmacy and pick up a test kit.
- Hello, hormones: You’re starting to feel the first hormonal effects, whether that’s sore breasts, fatigue, or that nausea you’ve heard so much about.
- Baby's forming: The placenta is under construction and in a position to start providing nourishment to your little creation.
- Little layers of wonder: This week, the embryo divides into three layers called germ layers. The outer layer will become the brain and nervous system, skin, eyes, ears, and hair. The inner layer will form the lungs, intestines, bladder, and liver. And the middle layer will become the circulatory system, reproductive system, kidneys, cartilage, muscles, and bones. A healthy diet will nourish your baby’s growth, complemented with a prenatal vitamin that has DHA to support baby’s brain development.

Early pregnancy ultrasound
Two stripes on the test is always a complete surprise for a woman, even if she already knows about her position in her soul. After the first confirmation, the girl most often wants to see the baby with her own eyes and make sure that he is developing normally. This can be done using an instrumental method such as ultrasound. Usually, expectant mothers, especially expecting their first child, have a lot of questions.
How to avoid missing an ectopic and missed pregnancy
Often, pregnant women at the very beginning are afraid of two conditions - an ectopic or missed pregnancy. Especially experienced by those who have already experienced it once.
In an ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg does not reach the uterus and is implanted in other places - most often these are the fallopian tubes. If nothing is done, the embryo will grow and burst the tube. In this case, the woman can not be saved. Therefore, an ectopic pregnancy should be terminated without hesitation. Since the embryo is not removed separately, the entire tube is cut out. This can be done twice in a lifetime, after which pregnancy occurs only after artificial replanting using IVF. An ectopic pregnancy can be suspected indirectly by the level of β-hCG, but only the presence of a fetal egg in the uterus on ultrasound clearly refutes it.
But the experiences of the expectant mother do not end there. Frozen pregnancy is impossible to predict. In some cases, doctors shrug their shoulders, and why this happened remains unknown. It is dangerous to wait for a non-developing egg to come out by itself for a long time, since it can begin to decompose, and the uterus can become inflamed. Up to 6 weeks, the gynecologist can offer a less traumatic medical interruption, and after - classic abortive methods. It is possible to unambiguously identify a frozen one only by ultrasound - it shows that the fetal egg is smaller than it should be for its term or a heartbeat is not heard. At random, such a diagnosis is never made, because the life of the unborn child depends on it, and most often an ultrasound is prescribed again after a few days. If it turns out that the dimensions have not changed, and there is still no heartbeat, then - alas!
Why early ultrasound is needed
Ultrasound diagnostics is a safe method that has no contraindications. But it is pointless to do it before 4-5 weeks, the fetal egg cannot be seen so early. In this case, a transvaginal probe is used for ultrasound. In public clinics, the first ultrasound diagnosis is carried out as part of the first screening at 12 weeks, and earlier it is prescribed only if the woman herself or her doctor is worried about something:
- a woman complains of pain in the lower part of the abdominal region and bloody “daub”;
- expectant mother has serious chronic diseases;
- pregnancy occurred, although the couple was protected by a spiral;
- the patient took dangerous and heavy drugs, suffered an infection, was irradiated. Although the principle of “all or nothing” usually works up to 4 weeks, doctors recommend being examined;
- in the anamnesis, the future mother herself and her relatives had multiple pregnancies;
- the embryo was transplanted using IVF;
- physician suspects hydatidiform mole, ectopic or miscarriage;
- the patient was diagnosed with various formations in the uterus and ovaries;
- if there is a risk of developing genetic abnormalities (for example, there have already been interrupted pregnancies due to malformations, chromosomal disorders).
In all other cases, a woman can, of her own free will, do an ultrasound for a fee. In Kaluga, you can be examined at the Elita clinic. Our doctors work on modern high-precision equipment and have extensive experience in instrumental diagnostics.

Ultrasound at the 5th obstetric week of pregnancy
There are standard time frames for performing ultrasound screening during pregnancy. For the first trimester, this is 10-13 weeks, for the second - 20-24, for the third - 32-34 weeks. But in some cases, ultrasound diagnostics can be performed not only during these periods, but also earlier. Quite often, women are prescribed ultrasound at the 5th week of pregnancy. This is the period when the embryo can already be visualized, and its heart begins to beat.
Why is an ultrasound done at the 5th week of pregnancy?
Ultrasound at the 5th obstetric week of pregnancy is carried out in order to:
- Confirm pregnancy. At 5 weeks, a pregnancy test should already show two stripes, although rare errors do occur. To 100% confirm pregnancy, ultrasound screening can be performed.
- Confirm correct attachment of the gestational sac. It must be fixed in the uterus, otherwise (for example, when the fetal egg is fixed in the fallopian tube), an ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed.
- Assess the viability of the embryo in the fetal egg.
- Detect multiple pregnancy.
- Refute the possibility that the elevated hCG level, to which the pregnancy test responded, is not a consequence of the pathology of the female reproductive system.
- Identify threats of miscarriage.
As a rule, at such an early stage, ultrasound is prescribed for those women who:
- Previously had a caesarean section. In this case, you need to see how the chorion (which will later become the placenta) is attached. Close attachment to the uterine scar or attachment directly to the scar can be a serious threat of miscarriage.
- Previously suffered miscarriages.
- Previously had a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.
- Got pregnant with IVF procedure.
What happens to the fetus in the fifth week?
During the first four weeks of pregnancy, the fetus developed at an incredible rate. In the fifth week, his heart already begins to beat, the cardiovascular and nervous systems develop. Also, the formation of the spine, spinal cord, and the fetal brain now consists of two lobes.
By the fifth week, the fetus is pear-shaped and about 4 mm long. Such dimensions can already be visualized with ultrasound scanning.
The rounded part of the embryo in the future will be transformed into the head of the baby, and the sharp part - into the spine.
Also on the fifth week, the laying of the internal organs of the fetus occurs: liver, pancreas, larynx, trachea.
How to prepare for an ultrasound?
A procedure such as an ultrasound at the 5th week of pregnancy requires little preparation. 2-3 days before the examination, it is necessary to exclude from the diet foods that lead to excessive gas formation in the intestines. Also, before the ultrasound, you need to empty your bladder.
How is an ultrasound done at the fifth week of pregnancy?
At such an early date as 5 weeks, ultrasound is done transvaginally, introducing a special sensor into the vagina of a pregnant woman. Beforehand, a special medical condom is put on the sensor.
Transvaginal ultrasound is a painless procedure, but it can cause some discomfort to a pregnant woman. It is not recommended to carry out such a diagnostic procedure if a woman has spotting or complains of abdominal pain.
What will ultrasound show at 5 weeks pregnant?
An ultrasound at the fifth week of pregnancy will show a fetal egg with an embryo inside (during the normal, standard course of pregnancy). Also, according to the results of the scan, it will be possible to judge the attachment of the chorion, the location of the fetal egg in the uterine cavity. If the fetal egg has not reached the uterus and is fixed, for example, in the fallopian tube, an ultrasound will show this, and the woman will be diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy.
Ultrasound at the 5th week will show the baby's heart, will allow you to assess the frequency of his beating. Already at such a short time, it will be possible to suspect possible pathologies of the fetal heart, although it is difficult to make an unambiguous conclusion about the presence / absence of heart disease.
Ultrasound will show how actively the fetal neural tube is developing, which will later become the child's bone marrow.
Fetal movements
To assess the viability of the fetus and its well-being in the womb, its heart rate is evaluated.
Standards and definitions
There are several main parameters of fetal development that are taken into account when deciphering the results of ultrasound:
- embryo size - the standard value is about 4 mm;
- the size of the yolk sac - the standard value is 4-5 mm;
- the size of the fetal egg - according to the norm, it should be approximately 1 cm;
- Heart rate - the norm is from 70 to 100 beats / min.
It is also possible to estimate the weight of the embryo by ultrasound - it should be approximately 4 g.
Ultrasound results are not the only information that should be taken into account when making a diagnosis. It is also important to evaluate blood tests, urine tests and the results of other additional studies.
If the embryo is not visible on ultrasound
If an ultrasound at the 5th obstetric week of pregnancy shows that there is a fetal egg, but the embryo is not visible in it, this is not a cause for serious concern. Probably, the capabilities of the apparatus are not so great as to make out the embryo at such an early stage. To confirm pregnancy, you can undergo an ultrasound a little later - at 6-7 weeks.
A more sad forecast is also possible. The lack of visualization of the embryo may indicate a missed pregnancy or anembryony (that is, the embryo did not conceive or it died immediately after conception). The attending physician in such cases must understand the causes of the death of the embryo and prescribe certain examinations to the woman.
