How Facebook monopolized our birthdays
No other social network has succeeded in developing the theme of celebrations on the Internet in the way that Facebook did. Last summer, Twitter introduced the ability to add your birthday to your profile information and receive balloon animations on that day, but the feature didn't really catch on. On Twitter, birthday information may appear in the feed, but most people don't look up their friends' birthdays to congratulate them, and Twitter certainly doesn't promote this feature as aggressively as Facebook does. The congratulations feature is not on Instagram and Snapchat, and other ways to wish someone a happy birthday are email and SMS. nine0005
Some practices, like uploading videos and tagging people, the company had to train users. Happy birthday greetings to other people appeared by itself, and now it is a feature that Facebook owns. Birthday reminders appeared on the platform in 2013, until that time the list of birthday friends could be seen to the right of the news feed, and it was up to you to decide what to do next.
Although Facebook did not force anyone to organize an online celebration, the developers of the platform, nevertheless, thought about it, adding various functions to the site that complement the holiday. The Events feature, which was introduced in 2005, was partly intended for planning birthday parties. (Back in the good old days when Facebook was only available to students, the Events feature was called My Parties.)
Not so long ago, Facebook continued to develop the congratulations service. In 2014, "postcards" appeared on the platform - square fields that collect all the congratulations sent to your wall on this special day. This way you don't have to scroll through your timeline.
At the end of July, the holiday video feature appeared on Facebook. It collects all the entries that users left on your timeline on your birthday. This is strongly reminiscent of another feature of Facebook - the creation of flipbooks, or animated videos from photos. So you can thank everyone for the congratulations at once. nine0005
What happens if you don't congratulate the person?
Facebook has been around for about 12 years, and it can be said that the most relevant, useful and kind function of the platform is the reminder calendar.
And that's good. Birthdays are very important - and the ones that are forgotten hurt the most. In 2009, the British Open University published an article exploring the traditions and experiences of celebrating a birthday among people of different ages. Among them was the story of a woman. nine0005
She told how she had been waiting all day for a gift, expecting a surprise to be prepared for her. When the day passed, and there was no surprise, the woman burst into tears.
"The strength and reciprocity of a relationship is often measured by the ability to remember a person's birthday," study author Bill Bizeway wrote in the article.
This function not only helps, but its disappearance would lead to a new wave of indignation and sadness.

Who is congratulated more often?
There is a certain hierarchy of congratulations on Facebook - not everyone gets the same amount of attention, some people are congratulated more than others. According to a 2013 study at Long Beach State University, women who are in a relationship receive the most birthday wishes. The second place according to this indicator is occupied by men in relationships, then single women and, finally, single men. (Initially, the researchers assumed that single women would be the most popular.)
The reasons why women receive more congratulations is obvious:
"On average, women have a wider circle of acquaintances and lead a richer social life than men," the study authors wrote.
Another reason was to confirm what everyone has known for a long time:
“If a man likes a woman, he wishes her a happy birthday as a sign of attention. Women look after men much less often, so they congratulate them less often on their birthdays. ” nine0005
Thus, with the help of congratulations on Facebook, you can satisfy the thirst for communication, but this is not a surprise to anyone. And the greater number of congratulations from people who have a partner is explained by simple mathematics: people in a relationship share social ties with each other and receive congratulations not only from their own acquaintances, but also from acquaintances of their half.
You can't argue with that. But there is another, slightly less joyful, but more logical reason: people in relationships are kinder than lonely people. A study from the University of California writes: “For example, a single man may change his mind about “getting in touch,” or in this case, wishing happy birthday to a single woman he likes, because he is afraid of a possible rejection on her part. nine0005
Why do we congratulate friends on Facebook?
"Facebook has a monopoly on birthdays," says Christopher Warren, co-author of the study and assistant professor of psychology at the University of California. According to him, this was partly due to the size of the virtual audience of the network - everyone is there. And when everyone is represented somewhere, certain patterns of human behavior appear.
"Probably it can be explained in terms of evolutionary psychology, ways of finding a partner and maintaining social status," says Warren. “[We] run a specific type of hierarchy. There is a social order." nine0005
It also has to do with "behavior of the observer," says Warren. “You see someone being congratulated on their birthday, and you start to feel like you are making a mistake by not doing the same. You seem like a loner who does not communicate with anyone on Facebook so as not to wish anyone a happy birthday. It happens on an emotional level, and it's in our nature to want to join other people in sending congratulations." Warren thinks Facebook reminders are "Help Jason celebrate!" - have a similar effect. There is some social pressure involved here. nine0005

Another study by the Association for Computing Machinery looked at the evolution of Facebook communication. The researchers found that certain features of the social network - including birthday notifications - caused an increase in the number of publications. People who didn't post anything regularly really felt the need to do so because of the feature.
According to the study, birthday greetings account for 39% of first contacts of users with friends on the platform. The authors again see this as the merit of reminders, which we see almost the first thing we do when logging in. Scientists make the assumption that thanks to the mechanism of reminders, interaction occurs that otherwise would not occur. Of course, someone remembers the birthday of close friends or relatives without reminders, but then we would have to choose from a variety of ways to convey our congratulations. (SMS? Phone call? Or maybe Facebook?) We're used to getting birthday notifications for everyone in our social circle, as well as having a handy tool for sending birthday greetings. The need to keep everything in mind and then choose the method of congratulations is completely excluded. nine0005
Of course, this benefits Facebook. This function is very simply organized - there is no need to update anything, people themselves provide the necessary information when registering, and they do not need to be persuaded for a long time to use it.
