I was pregnant with my son during one of the hottest summers on record. By the time the end of my third trimester rolled around, I was so swollen I could barely turn over in bed.
At the time, I worked in our local labor and delivery unit as a nurse, so I knew my doctor well. At one of my checkups, I begged her to do something to help spur my labor.
If only they would strip my membranes to induce labor, I reasoned, I could be out of my misery and meet my baby boy sooner.
Here’s a look at how effective membrane stripping is for inducing labor, plus the risks and benefits.
Stripping the membranes is a way to induce labor. It involves your doctor sweeping their (gloved) finger between the thin membranes of the amniotic sac in your uterus. It’s also known as a membrane sweep.
This motion helps separate the sac. It stimulates prostaglandins, compounds that act like hormones and can control certain processes in the body. One of these processes is — you guessed it — labor.
In some cases, your doctor can also gently stretch or massage the cervix to help it start to soften and dilate.
Your doctor may suggest trying a membrane stripping if:
- you’re near or past your due date
- there isn’t a pressing medical reason to induce labor with a faster method
You don’t need to do anything to prepare for a membrane stripping. The procedure can be done in your doctor’s office.

Membrane stripping might be most effective for women who are past their due dates. One study found that membrane sweeping could increase the likelihood of spontaneous labor within 48 hours.
Membrane stripping isn’t as effective as other types of induction, such as using medications. It’s generally only used in situations when there really isn’t a pressing medical reason to induce.

To be honest, a membrane stripping isn’t a comfy experience. It can be uncomfortable to go through, and you may feel a bit sore afterward.

At the same time, this system will work only if the outer layer, at least its upper part, remains dry and relatively clean, not to mention the limited capabilities of the membrane itself. A wet, or dirty, outer layer, in addition to becoming heavier, will significantly prevent excess moisture from escaping to the outside. Let's add here a strongly clamped neck, and the effect of "rotting" of the legs will not be long in coming. As you can see, the problem is not so much in the membrane, but in the improper state of the outer layers, materials located directly above the membrane.
Thus, the water-repellent impregnation not only protects the outer layers from getting wet and dirty, while maintaining the necessary flexibility and prolonging the service life, but allows the membrane to perform its functions.
Which water repellents should be used and when?
Most modern footwear offered for use in the field has a water-repellent treatment from the factory, and this treatment is usually significantly superior in performance and durability to user-applied treatments. Since they are applied to a new, perfectly clean material, exactly without gaps, and in compliance with the required concentration, which, naturally, an ordinary user at home cannot achieve.
The wear of the factory impregnation can happen already at the first exit, a lot depends on the quality of the application and the conditions where the shoes are used. Naturally, if you move in dry weather and on prepared routes, nothing threatens your impregnation. At the same time, if your route passes through unprepared rough terrain, the impregnation properties can be reduced to zero after 50-100 meters of walking on thick grass, which will work as an abrasive even if it is dry.
The first clear sign that the impregnation is already worth updating is the absorption of moisture into the upper layers of the shoe, and not its "reflection" in the form of dripping drops. Usually, first of all, water-repellent impregnation wears out in places of seed contact with abrasives, frequent bends and excessive friction from the same laces. Therefore, these places should be cleaned and processed more carefully, and do not be lazy to remove the laces before processing.
As impregnations, you can safely choose products from brands such as Fibertec, Grangers and Nikwax, as well as those indicated by the shoe manufacturer or the membrane manufacturer, appropriate for the product.
