As part of a 2021 coronavirus relief package, significant modifications were made to the country's tax legislation. Many U.S. residents consequently earned additional Child Tax Credit relief, which was given out as monthly payments of up to 300 dollars per child.
The Child Tax Credit was reduced to 2,000 dollars per eligible child for tax year 2022, and the 300 dollars advance monthly installments were no longer available.
The Child Tax Credit is scheduled to stay at 2,000 dollars per eligible child for tax year 2023, but without any upfront monthly payments.
Due to a temporary change in law, more families-including those without recent income-now qualify for and receive funds from the Child Tax Credit (CTC).
What is Child Tax Credit?
The child tax credit, or CTC as it is more often known, is a tax credit provided to taxpayers with dependent children under the age of 17. You must demonstrate to the IRS that you and your child meet certain requirements in order to claim the credit when you file your taxes.
The credit fades down in increments after a specific maximum is reached, so you'll also need to demonstrate that your salary is below that level. If your modified adjusted gross income is higher than the cap, your credit may be reduced or you may lose eligibility completely.
Are all parents eligible for receiving Child Tax Credit?
No. In order to be eligible for the Child Tax Credit, parents must file taxes and meet certain residency and income standards.
The residency criteria is met by parents with children who are 16 years of age or younger on the last day of the year and who maintain their primary residence in the United States for more than half of the year. Federal workers and members of the US military serving overseas are also eligible.
The Child Tax Credit has income restrictions that must be met. A eligible parent must earn the following modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) as of 2023:
200,000 dollars or less for people filing as a head of household, single, or married but living apart
400,000 dollars or less for married couples if they file jointly
No cash payments in 2023
The IRS paid a portion of the Child Tax Credit in advance for a portion of 2021. Both in 2022 and 2023, those advance payments were not scheduled to be made available.
Although there are ongoing political initiatives to extend the monthly Child Tax Credit payments, a change does not appear likely at this time.

In 2021 and 2022, the enlarged child tax credit (CTC) gave 39 million households unconditional cash payments, raising millions of children out of poverty.
But just as they failed to include a renewal of the programme in the Inflation Reduction Act they passed earlier this year in the United States, Democrats have been unable to have it included in the $1.7 trillion spending plan making its way through Congress.
Democrats and progressives fought to make the child tax credit more refundable so that more low-income families may continue to be eligible for it, as they were under the American Rescue Plan's temporary extension in 2021.
How much Child Tax Credit did families receive in 2021 and 2022?
The Child Tax Credit was enhanced by the American Rescue Plan from $2,000 to $3,000 per child for children over six years old and from $2,000 to $3,600 for children under six years old.
Its age limit was also changed from 16 to 17.
"Republican leaders decided to send a lump of coal to America's children this year," said Michael Bennet, Senator for Colorado.
"We know that the most significant step Congress can take to help America's children is to support an expanded Child Tax Credit. When Congress took action on this in 2021, we cut childhood poverty in America in half.
How much Child Tax Credit will families receive in 2023?
If a couple made up to $150,000 or a single parent/head of household family up to $112,500, all taxpaying households were eligible for the full credit.
But now that the enhanced child tax credit era appears to be officially over, things will likely return to how they were before the American Rescue Plan went into effect, meaning that families will only be capable of claiming $2,000 per child in 2023.
"Over the last few weeks, Republican leaders in Washington refused to even discuss a deal that would benefit America's kids and businesses," Michael Bennet added.
"They were absent from the negotiating table, and the coming year will be much harder for America's families as a result."

Sber ranked the financial literacy of residents of Russian cities

Residents of Volgograd, Perm and Ulyanovsk consider themselves the most financially literate, Sber's subsidiaries found out - SberStrakhovanie, SberLife Insurance and SberNPF. The companies have compiled a corresponding rating of Russian regions.
The list was formed on the basis of answers from residents of large Russian cities about specific skills: the ability to save, maintain a family budget, invest, understand the stock market, a general understanding of what is happening in the economy, the tax system, the ability to understand financial documents, investment, insurance, pension and savings products, to recognize fraud.

The top 10 includes cities where the sum of the indicators - the percentage of residents who positively assess their financial skills - is the largest.
Thus, the residents of Volgograd turned out to be the most financially literate. The second and third places were taken by Perm and Ulyanovsk. The top five also includes Novokuznetsk and Chelyabinsk. Next in the ranking are Khabarovsk, Orenburg, Tyumen, Ufa and Yaroslavl.
It is noteworthy that the answers of Russians vary depending on the city. For example, Khabarovsk has the highest indicator in Russia in terms of the ability to manage a personal budget (94%), and in Chelyabinsk and Ulyanovsk - outstanding skills to recognize financial fraud (88 and 85% respectively), in Orenburg - to save (70%). At the same time, in the cities that topped the rating, the population has all the skills evenly at a high level.

The study was conducted in 2022 in 37 Russian cities with a population of over 500,000 people using the telephone survey (CATI). In each city, at least 350 respondents were interviewed using a representative sample.
