Showing early third pregnancy
7 Unexpected Ways the 3rd Pregnancy is Completely Different
When you do something multiple times, you likely know how things are going to go by the 3rd time. Am I right?
Unfortunately, pregnancy is not one of those predictable activities that you know exactly what to expect. Each one is unique and unpredictable in its own way.
We know this thanks to countless articles telling us that every pregnancy is different. I’m here to add to that and say it’s true! My third pregnancy has been different in ways that I never expected and I knew I had to share the unexpected differences in my 3rd pregnancy with my fellow mommas out there!
Here are 7 unexpected differences in my 3rd pregnancy!
1. Sharing the news feels different.
When you set out to share the news of your third pregnancy, something seems far less sensational.
The first pregnancy announcement is generally a huge shock, and you’re busting at the seams waiting for the 2nd trimester to tell the world. People are thrilled to hear your news and start asking when is the gender reveal and the baby shower.
By the second pregnancy, people are still excited for you and they kind of expect it. Married with two kids is the American dream right? If you don’t have another right away, people will start asking you when you will!
Then the third pregnancy happens and while your family and friends are thrilled for you, it’s less sensational. And that’s okay!
There will always be the people that ask why you wanted more. Are you trying for a boy, if you have two girls? Was it an accident? So on and so forth. Luckily, no one has said anything like that…to my face.
2. You start showing sooner.
Hello, baby bump! By your 3rd baby, your uterus is like, “Don’t worry! I’ve got this momma!” With each pregnancy, you definitely start to show sooner.
By the third time around, your abdominal muscles have been stretched out a couple of times, so your body knows what to do. It starts making room for the baby pretty early on making it more difficult to conceal.
Here’s my 12-week bump comparison with each pregnancy.
3. You may gain weight faster.
Just like with showing sooner, there’s a good chance you’ll gain weight faster with your third pregnancy. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll end up gaining more, but it may come on a bit quicker with each subsequent pregnancy.
For starters, you may be starting your pregnancy at a higher weight than your first or second. (This isn’t always the case!) But if you have a small window of time between pregnancies, it can be hard to get back to your pre-baby weight.
After your first pregnancy, you also have way more to deal with. You already have a little one and likely a husband and a home to take care of making eating healthy hard while growing a human.
Another reason is that every pregnancy is different! No two pregnancies are the same, so you’re likely to gain weight at a different rate. Like I mentioned above, you start showing earlier because your body carries the baby lower which can lead to a different type of weight gain.
Personally and I know this isn’t the case for most women, but with each pregnancy, my nausea has decreased. I had almost constant nausea that started at 6 weeks and lasted until 17-18 weeks with my first. In my second pregnancy, I dealt with nausea for weeks 6 to 11. During this third pregnancy, I didn’t deal with morning sickness at all really! Occasional nausea, but that’s about it.
That lack of nausea meant I didn’t lose any weight at the beginning of my pregnancy, so I started gaining much earlier. No matter what, just know that your body is doing the work it needs to in order to grow your baby!
4. Time flies by
This unexpected “symptom” in your 3rd pregnancy may be a bit of a no-brainer. I mean, you’re busy chasing after two other children! Each pregnancy has gone by faster than the one before.
The first pregnancy seems to drag on. By the end, you may go on maternity leave a bit before your due date thinking that baby may come early — and likely does not.
During the second pregnancy, you are chasing around your first child busy taking them to activities and play dates. You know to expect to go longer or maybe you have a scheduled c-section or induction based on your first birth.
Once the third comes around, you’re possibly wanting time to slow down. Okay, maybe not quite that fast. But your other kids are involved in activities, school, and whatever else they have going on. You’re taking them to practice and running around getting everything they need making your pregnancy go much faster.
5. Your body starts hurting early on.
For my third pregnancy, I started experiencing mild sciatica pain at 14 weeks. 14 weeks y’all! With my first, it was closer to the end of pregnancy, and even with my second, it wasn’t until later in the second trimester. 14 weeks seemed early!
Needless to say, it’s continued to get worse from there! Each subsequent pregnancy takes a slightly harder toll on your body.
Not only has your body been stretched out before, but you’re also older. I hate to say it, but it’s the truth. Your older stretched-out body doesn’t handle pregnancy the way it did the first go around.
The best thing you can do to get your belly and back support brace, rest when you can, get massages and listen to any advice your doctor has for you!
In fact, check out these 3rd trimester must-haves. They’ve been life savers for me, and I started using several in my first and second trimesters this third go around.
6. The hormones are no joke.
Let’s be real, hormones are intense every pregnancy. I just feel like mine get even more intense with each pregnancy.
Not only do the hormones themselves seem heightened with each pregnancy, but the emotions and worries also grow each time you add a baby.
During your first pregnancy, your emotions revolve around the changes coming into your life and relationship. Fast forward to the next pregnancy, you still have those same worries as well as how the new baby will affect your first baby. Then you get to the third and you have two children, a partner, likely a home, and possibly pets to worry about while you’re at it!
If you happen to be pregnant in 2020 (like me), you have the added stresses of COVID-19, quarantine, social distancing and so much more added to your plate.
A combination of raging pregnancy hormones, familial worries, and stresses of life just adds up each time you get pregnant.
7. You don’t really need any more baby things. Or at least, that’s what you think.
If you’re like me and have one of each gender, your initial thought is that you don’t need anything at all! You have baby boy and girl clothes along with all the gadgets that came with those babies. Who needs a shower or more baby things?
At the same time, you find yourself wanting new things. As you start to go through your old baby items, you’re realizing how many outfits are stained or that the seasons are completely off. Maybe you need new covers for your breastfeeding pillow or Doc a Tot.
You don’t need anything big like a crib, swing, pack n play or toys. But if your friends and family want to throw you a shower or sprinkle, just say yes. I realize that you “don’t need anything”, but the second you start going through things you’ll wish that you had a few new things.
Remember, every pregnancy and every baby deserves to be celebrated, so accept it if it’s offered to you!
It’s harder in different ways than the first two.
The moral of the story is that by your third pregnancy, even if you think you’ve got it all down, it’s going to be unexpectedly different. It will be harder in some ways and easier in others.
You kind of know what to expect, but your body, emotions, and baby will likely throw you some curveballs along the way. You just have to take everything that it throws at you with grace. At least as much grace as a pregnant woman can muster!
These unexpected differences in your 3rd pregnancy are likely to be different for every woman. Most of all, it’s just important to know that in the end, it’s going to be different.

When Do You Start Showing? (Plus Why You Might Show Sooner)
When do you start showing in pregnancy? Find out in this article! Plus, surprising factors that affect when you do (or don’t) start showing.
Some expectant moms are chomping at the bit to start growing a bump. They’re so excited about their news that they want to show it on the outside! Others would rather keep it quiet until the second trimester when the chance of loss is lower. In either case, pregnant women want to know, “when do you start showing in pregnancy?”
When Do You Start Showing?
Many moms-to-be want to know, “when do you start showing?” But there is no definitive answer.
Many mamas notice changes in their own bodies before anyone else does. Some feel their clothing getting too small (or just uncomfortable) by the time they hit 8 weeks. Others can wear their regular clothes until closer to 6 months!
In general, other people may not notice your growing belly until at least 12 weeks. This is because the uterus doesn’t pop out of the pelvis until about this time. Doctors and midwives start measuring the fundal height at around 12 weeks as well, since it can finally be felt above the pelvic bone.
How early a pregnant woman shows is sometimes just a matter of chance, but there are some things that can affect when she starts to show:
Things That Affect When Pregnant Women Start Showing
First-time moms
Because first-time moms don’t have the same muscle memory as experienced moms, they often show later. The uterus is a muscle like any other, and if you haven’t used it before (to grow a baby), it will be slower to expand.
During subsequent pregnancies, the uterus expands more quickly, kind of like a balloon being blown up for the second time—since it’s already been stretched, it does so more easily the second time around.
Anecdotally, many moms agree that they started showing much sooner the second time around.

This mama is only 12 weeks pregnant, but this is her third pregnancy.
Carrying multiples!
When do you start showing with twins? The answer is generally earlier than a mama carrying one baby!
Though it’s not possible to know an exact date or time during pregnancy when you’ll start showing, twin pregnancies often cause a larger than average uterus size for gestational age. Because two babies usually take up more space than one, a twin pregnancy could be a reason that the belly “pops” sooner than expected.
However, fundal height is a more accurate gauge of a potential twin pregnancy than the way your belly looks. Ultimately, showing early isn’t a sign of a twin pregnancy, but if you already know you have twins on the way, you may also notice your belly shows earlier.
Shape/position of the uterus
The uterus is ideally in an anteverted position—in a right angle from the vagina, pointing toward the belly button. However, the uterus isn’t in a fixed position and can move from day to day (and even hour to hour!). Some uteruses do stay put in a different position, but it may be tipped upward slightly or it may go so far as to be folded over and pointing toward the tailbone or lower back (retroverted).
There’s nothing inherently wrong with these other uterine positions and it’s generally nothing to worry about. (Though some women attribute infertility or pain during sex to uterine position. ) But it can affect when you start to show:
- An anteverted (forward pointing uterus) is more likely to pop out of the abdomen sooner.
- A retroverted uterus (one that points backward) is more likely to grow up into the abdomen before popping out. Because of this, it could take longer for a woman with this uterine position to start showing.
Body type
Carrying high or low is often thought of as a gender predictor, but it’s more a sign of your body type.
Women with small frames may show earlier than larger women. And women who are carrying a little extra weight before pregnancy may not show as soon as women who have very little body fat.
When do you start showing if you have a longer torso? Tall women with long torsos generally have more room for the uterus to grow “up” before growing “out.” Similarly, if you have a short torso the uterus may begin growing “out” sooner due to lack of space.
Core strength
Women with very defined abdominal muscles may show later. This is because their abdominal muscles are very strong, and it takes longer for baby to “break through.” Women with weaker abdominal muscles may show earlier because the abs aren’t as tight, allowing the body to stretch more easily.

This mama is a personal trainer. As mentioned above, tight ab muscles can mean you start to show later in pregnancy. Believe it or not, she says she’s in her 8th month of pregnancy. ?
Age
Younger women may show later because of more muscle definition, though this is obviously not hard-and-fast. There are many lifestyle factors that affect this, and many women who are on the older side (as far as fertility goes) have strong ab muscles. There are plenty of younger mothers who have weaker ab muscles as well.

Diastasis Recti
During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles separate to allow the uterus to grow out of the abdomen. Diastasis recti is a condition where the two bands of muscles that run on either side of the belly button don’t completely close after a pregnancy.
So when do you start showing if you’ve been diagnosed with diastasis recti before? Women with this condition will show earlier due to the lack of support in the abdominal area.
•• 10 WE E K S •• Little bumpie, I can’t believe how fast everything is happening this pregnancy. My body clearly remembers what to do. I know how early I am, I know how small the baby is trust me iv done this all before but my bump is popping already, it isn’t bloat coz this is how I look in the morning. I look at least 15-20 weeks I’m scared to imagine what I’ll look like in another 10-20 weeks. They said it’s only one baby in there. Yesterday I felt the little flutters for the first time, and nope I’m 99% sure it was not gas I remember it all too well with Leon. I was about 13 weeks when I felt them with him. I’m extremely in tune with my body. I knew the second that little seed fertilised my egg that I was pregnant, I felt it all happen. ••• The last few weeks have been a roller coaster. I under estimated the challenge of the first trimester, with a toddler. I forgot how hard it can be on the body. The nausea, the fatigue, the head spins. Well all that plus having next to no sleep and chasing a toddler… deffinatly a challenge. But it’s a challenge I accept and begged for, a challenge I am blessed to compete in. ••• This pregnancy is already so different to the first. Everything is happening super fast, I feel like I’m going crazy at how much my body remembers and how far along I actually feel VS what I actually am. ••• The morning sickness/all day sickness is finally starting to pass and I’m just like a wild animal eating everything in site at the moment. The cravings have began already, ice chocolates and broccoli like I can’t eat enough broccoli ?? I’m super tried and dizzy still, all the time. i had that with Leon and had to carry jelly beans everywhere with me for a sugar hit. And the ligament pains have been driving me insane, when I was pregnant with Leon I separated my stomach muscles and never fixed it. Oops ??♀️ But don’t get me wrong in saying all of that I am loving being pregnant again. I live to be pregnant. When I was in between this pregnancy and my pregnancy with Leon I felt lost. It is my calling and I am so thankful everyday to nature for allowing me to grow and carry my children and be apart of this journey. ??

This mama is only 10 weeks pregnant, but was diagnosed with diastasis recti after a previous pregnancy.
Gastrointestinal symptoms
Gastrointestinal symptoms of early pregnancy, like gas, bloating, and constipation can cause you to look pregnant, even if you aren’t far enough along to really be showing that growing baby.

Family history
How did your mom or sisters show during their pregnancies? Every woman is different and will carry differently. But family members are likely to carry in a similar way, thanks to shared DNA. Don’t bank on it, but if your mom and sister both showed early, you may as well.
Abdominal surgery
When do you start showing if you have a history of abdominal surgeries? Prior surgery, including c-sections, can cause the muscles to be weaker in your midsection. This may cause you to show sooner than expected.
Incorrect due date
This is less likely to be the case, since many women know their cycles well (even if the pregnancy was a surprise!) and can estimate the due date accurately from that information. But it’s possible that, if you have wonky cycles or confused implantation bleeding for a period, you could have your dates wrong.
If this is the case, the fundal height (and perhaps an ultrasound) should help determine the right due date.

Remember…
Although most women will wonder when do you start showing during pregnancy, the health of your baby, in most cases, does not have any bearing on the size of your baby bump.
Some women don’t really start showing until they are almost halfway through their pregnancies. Likewise, showing early doesn’t always mean you’re going to have a big baby!
At 12 weeks your baby is only about the size of a lime, so a bigger bump is usually just a combination of the above factors. Your healthcare provider will monitor the size of your belly and will address any concerns you have about baby’s growth.

that time may not be aware of its state. The earliest modern diagnostic methods allow you to establish pregnancy on the 7-10th day after conception. All of them are based on the determination of the concentration of the hCG hormone in the body fluids. nine0003
Fertilization occurs in the upper fallopian tube. Normally, a fertilized egg moves through the tube into the uterine cavity. On the 6-7th day after conception, the embryo is implanted, i.e. attached to the uterus - according to statistics, in about 20% of women, implantation is accompanied by bleeding, which is most often mistaken for the next menstruation.
Chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) begins to produce one of the membranes of the embryo called the chorion. If the normal level of ?-hCG in the blood does not exceed 5 mIU / ml (international units per ml), then already on the 6-8th day after conception it reaches 25 mIU / ml. During normal pregnancy, the level of this hormone doubles every 2-3 days, reaching a peak at 8-10 weeks. nine0087
A blood test for hCG is the earliest and most reliable method for diagnosing pregnancy today, it can be performed 7-10 days after conception, the result of the analysis is ready in a day.
The hormone hCG is also present in the urine of a pregnant woman (however, its concentration in the urine increases 1–2 days later than in the blood serum). This is what home pregnancy tests are based on.
Most tests have a standard sensitivity of 20-25 mIU hCG / ml, an objective result can be obtained in the first days of a missed period, i.e. about two weeks after conception. However, there are tests with high sensitivity (10 mIU hCG / ml) that can recognize pregnancy even with a low level of hCG, which allows them to be used on the 7th day of pregnancy, that is, 1-2 days before the expected menstruation. nine0087
There are 4 main types of home pregnancy tests, they differ in device, quality and price.
Paper test strips are the simplest and cheapest. They are a multilayer strip impregnated with a reagent, which is immersed in a container with urine for 5–10 seconds. The sensitivity of the strip is 25 mIU.
It is better to choose a test strip with a width of at least 3 mm (they are from 2.5 to 5 mm) - in this case, the liquid quickly and evenly saturates the absorption surface of the test, and it does not have time to soak. nine0087
The disadvantages include the fact that the carrier of the reagent is paper - it is impossible to evenly apply the reagent on it, so there may be errors.
If the strip is immersed for a long time or, vice versa, the test result may also be incorrect - if the test is underexposed, the reagent strip may not be sufficiently saturated with urine, and the test will not show anything. If overexposed, the reagent may wash off, and the second strip will again not appear. In addition, only morning urine is suitable for the test, which must be collected in a separate clean container. nine0003
Tablet tests (test cassettes) is a more advanced device, its device does not have the disadvantages that are observed in test strips. Tablet tests are more sensitive (10-25 mIU), they are used for professional analysis in hospitals. To see the result, it is necessary to apply a drop of urine into a special window on the plastic test with a pipette attached to the test.
Inkjet tests are fundamentally different from other tests with a more complex device and high sensitivity - they can recognize pregnancy even with a low level of hCG (10 MIU / ml). Today they are recognized as the most perfect. nine0087
The advantage is that they can be used in any conditions and at any time, it is enough to substitute the receiving end of the test under the urine stream.
Reservoir test systems are a plastic reservoir for collecting liquid with a test part built into the side surface. The test part itself will absorb the right amount of liquid. The result can be read in the test window located on the outside of the tank.
Pregnancy tests may give false negative or false positive results. nine0087
A false negative result (there is pregnancy, but the test does not show it) can occur when the test was performed incorrectly (the instructions were not followed), when the gestational age is still too short and the hCG level is too low to detect it, or the test not sensitive enough.
In addition, an erroneous result is possible when drinking a large amount of liquid - the concentration of hCG in the urine decreases. If there is a delay, and the test shows a negative result, you need to do it again in a few days. nine0087
False-positive result (test shows two lines in the absence of pregnancy) occurs when a woman takes drugs containing hCG for trophoblastic tumors and dysfunctional ovarian diseases.
After a miscarriage or early abortion or removal of an ectopic pregnancy, hCG remains in the body for some time and the test gives false positive results.
The disadvantage of all hCG tests is that they are equally positive in both uterine and ectopic pregnancies. An accurate answer can only be obtained with the help of ultrasound. Therefore, during pregnancy, it is important to contact a gynecologist as soon as possible for an ultrasound examination. It can be done starting from 2-3 weeks after conception. nine0087

Early pregnancy ultrasound
Two stripes on the test is always a complete surprise for a woman, even if she already knows about her position in her soul. After the first confirmation, the girl most often wants to see the baby with her own eyes and make sure that he is developing normally. This can be done using an instrumental method such as ultrasound. Usually, expectant mothers, especially expecting their first child, have a lot of questions. nine0003
How to avoid missing ectopic and non-developing pregnancies
Often, pregnant women at the very beginning are afraid of two conditions - an ectopic or missed pregnancy. Especially experienced by those who have already experienced it once.
In an ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg does not reach the uterus and is implanted in other places - most often these are the fallopian tubes. If nothing is done, the embryo will grow and burst the tube. In this case, the woman can not be saved. Therefore, an ectopic pregnancy should be terminated without hesitation. Since the embryo is not removed separately, the entire tube is cut out. This can be done twice in a lifetime, after which pregnancy occurs only after artificial replanting using IVF. An ectopic pregnancy can be suspected indirectly by the level of β-hCG, but only the presence of a fetal egg in the uterus on ultrasound clearly refutes it. nine0003
But the experiences of the expectant mother do not end there. Frozen pregnancy is impossible to predict. In some cases, doctors shrug their shoulders, and why this happened remains unknown. It is dangerous to wait for a non-developing egg to come out by itself for a long time, since it can begin to decompose, and the uterus can become inflamed. Up to 6 weeks, the gynecologist can offer a less traumatic medical interruption, and after - classic abortive methods. It is possible to unambiguously identify a frozen one only by ultrasound - it shows that the fetal egg is smaller than it should be for its term or a heartbeat is not heard. At random, such a diagnosis is never made, because the life of the unborn child depends on it, and most often an ultrasound is prescribed again after a few days. If it turns out that the dimensions have not changed, and there is still no heartbeat, then - alas! nine0003
Why early ultrasound is needed
Ultrasound diagnostics is a safe method that has no contraindications. But it is pointless to do it before 4-5 weeks, the fetal egg cannot be seen so early. In this case, a transvaginal probe is used for ultrasound. In public clinics, the first ultrasound diagnosis is carried out as part of the first screening at 12 weeks, and earlier it is prescribed only if the woman herself or her doctor is worried about something:
- a woman complains of pain in the lower part of the abdominal region and bloody “daub”;
- expectant mother has serious chronic diseases;
- pregnancy occurred, although the couple was protected by a spiral;
- the patient took dangerous and heavy drugs, had an infection, was irradiated. Although the principle of “all or nothing” usually works up to 4 weeks, doctors recommend being examined;
- in the anamnesis, the future mother herself and her relatives had multiple pregnancies; nine0155
- the embryo was transplanted using IVF;
- physician suspects hydatidiform mole, ectopic or miscarriage;
- the patient was diagnosed with various formations in the uterus and ovaries;
- if there is a risk of developing genetic abnormalities (for example, there have already been interrupted pregnancies due to malformations, chromosomal disorders).
